2008 BMW e90 Unknown noise w/ video please help

All,

Can you help me identify this noise? It sounds like it could be a rear differential issue from what I have read. It is a whirring/whistling type noise that only seems to occur at 50/60 mph in 4-5-6th gear. It sounds like it is originating from the rear passenger side. 2008 m3 e90 6MT. Please help! Thanks

I have a diff whirring noise at 3K rpm under partial/light load, typical for cruising, which sounds similar, best as I can tell.. noise has been there for 3 years without change.

I can hear it clearly , it's a whine noise and it makes me think on the whine noise of the Harrop SC .
But I have no idea of what it could be

Thanks all. The noise was hard to capture in the video (cell phone) and sounds much more invasive in person. After researching rear differential whirring noises - I found some better quality videos that seemed to be the exact noise I am experiencing. Car is currently at the shop for a look - Ill post updates when I get them.

Not sure I understand your post. Are you saying that the noise is coming from rod bearings? Theres no engine knock associated with the noise.

Update

Got the car back and they said it was "normal". It makes a sognificantly different sound from 60-80 mph which just can not be normal. They are bringing it to a BMW service center for a second opinion. If this is deemed "normal" im not sure I can deal with it and may look into an S4

We/I don't have such a noise , and that's why your noise is "NOT" normal !
Such a noise would drive me crazy , and I really hope the BMW service center for a second opinion can find the cause of the noise .

Please keep us posted , and thanks for the update .

I never ended up making it to the next service appointment. I just felt there was too much wrong with the car for a "new" purchase. I realized I was trying to force myself into an m3, and this just wasn't the right one.

Ended up getting myself into a 235i and the thing is incredible

Probably regular diff or transmission noise. Its pretty standard on this car. List to the whine of a straight cut transmission in a race car and this will sound like nothing.

I had a hard time thinking it was normal since the noise would change with throttle response in the 60-80mph range. Even if it was normal, I figure I couldn't tolerate that over the long term. Thanks for the input!
