Lightbulb Is the new Porsche 991-R worth the hype and $$$$

I was thinking to get one until I found out how impossible it was to buy this car even at MSRP

McLaren and other makers need to learn from what Porsche is doing since they obviously know how to create demand for their cars.

I didn't even know till sales manager told me they gave 918 owners first dibs, are there really 991 people that own 918's?????

The simplest way to create demand for a car is to make it great, then tell everyone "You can't have it."

No chance in hell it's worth the money. I would even argue the GT3 RS isn't worth the money (at least not at the price people are paying, but I probably wouldn't buy one at MSRP either). I have been a Porsche fan my whole life, but I'm just not interested, the C2S or GT3 are the only 911s I would consider

If it is selling for over MSRP and it is sold out then by definition the people buying it think it is worth the money. Porsche only cares that they can sell at or above MSRP, and if they go for above this it was even better. Time for another "special edition" 911, using 95-99% of existing parts configured slightly different.

On the flip side, obviously many believe this and maybe even every Porsche is overpriced.

Yeah, but do those people think it's worth the money as a good drivers car or as an investment? (Actually now that I think about it, most of the people buying them are so wealthy they probably don't care about it as a performance car OR as an investment)

It's an investment car. Anything not mass produced by Porsche is going straight to museums.

I bought two Turbo S 911's in the last few years and that's like their Accord-equivalent I don't even get the time of day at the dealer. You gotta have major status AS A DEALER to get an allocation of these limited edition cars....imagine what it takes as an individual. And yes it's worth it if people are paying for it. Econ 101.

come on the 911 turbo s is no accord. it's at least acura. :-)
but yeah the 991 R(s) are already spoken for. They are not for the middle class people. They are for the super rich collectors who will barely drive them.

Trust me I was stoked but at the same time humbling picking up my 991 back in December when the showroom had only 918's, a bunch of GT3 RS, and some insane collector stuff like Carrera GT, pristine air-cooled 993 and 964 Turbos and some Porsche cup and race cars, etc I don't think anything was priced under $300k and half the stuff was $500k to well over a $million.

No, but there are exactly 918, 918 owners... They were sold out before production began.

Being a long-time customer and/or owning a 918 will do it. In my case, it was the need for a new engine in the girlfriend's GT3 RS within 3 weeks of ownership. Agreed on a 911R allocation instead of a replacement car.
Wow that's interesting. Engine fixed under warranty and a 991-R. Did they ask you to sign a no-flip release letter?

Of course its worth the money, if you can get it at sticker.
Buy it, sell it $150k above list and buy a new GT3 with the profit.

No. I have no intentions of flipping the car or the allocation. I doubt the market for it will repeat what we saw with the 4.0, either.

As pure investments I have doubts if many of these will really be that good or if the owner still needs to enjoy having them for it to make any sense.

Buy it for $200k (guessing reality is higher) and wanting 8% annual return and it needs to be worth $431k in 10 years. Then assuming some maintenance and insurance on a really expensive car which will cut into your return.

10% return makes this a $518k car in 10 years (again, without expenses).

I'd love one, that houndstooth interior, the simple bodywork, that motor/trans.... what's not to love other than $$$ and availability.

That motor in a Cayman GTS with the GT4 suspension .......
