BMW X5 40e - As fuel efficient as a 750iL xDrive?

A potentially controversial perspective on plug-in hybrids is presented in the linked article. YMMV.

http://www.autoevolution.com/news/do...#ixzz43j4Mm4fn

"With increased weight comes worse fuel economy and inferior handling, so they have that against them as well. To give you another example, a couple of weeks ago I test drove a BMW X5 4.0e while one of my colleagues spent some time with a BMW 750iL xDrive. As it turns out, we achieved somewhat similar fuel economy figures despite the fact that he was commanding a 450 hp beast, while I was behind the wheel of a 320 hp plug-in hybrid. So, a turbocharged four-cylinder helped by an electric motor but with a huge battery to carry was almost as fuel-efficient as a twin-turbocharged V8."

Why didn't even look at the 40e. Figured all the star and planets had
to be in alignment for great numbers. On top of being new to the line
up, saw issues didn't want to deal with. Got rid of a diesel which was
constant emission issues. Mileage was same or worst than a 35i.
Along with the noisy engine clatter. From what found studying
resale value sites, 35d's were way lower than what they recommended.
So what claimed were of good deal, were really what the SUV's worth not
a good deal.

40e could be like the diesel great under warranty but once gone, don't
own.

The hybrid is good only if you are doing short duration journeys where you can recharge after each trip. As soon as you start relying on that 2.0i engine to haul you and that battery pack around things start to go all Pete tong with the fuel efficiency!

2013d you must have a great 3.5i to get 35mpg out of it to match the diesels!

My friend in his SL550 constantly raves about his almost 30 mpg highway, where on a really good day I can get 24 mpg max. That's what we get for driving a heavy box on the road.

I'll keep you posted on the fuel efficiency of the 40e as we pick ours up today. It will be primarily my wife's car to drive and since she does mostly short trips I think we will get good results.

The $4,668 federal tax credit (plus a state tax credit) buys a lot of gas even if it doesn't totally meet expectations.

Prospective lessees should keep in mind this federal tax credit is available only to buyers and not to persons leasing the vehicle.

It's more like $5k base 35i xLine to base 40e xLine. But point well taken!
