One step closer to Skynet

Atlas from Boston Dynamics

Pretty amazing stuff these guys make, no wonder Google acquired them

A new version of Atlas, designed to operate outdoors and inside buildings. It is specialized for mobile manipulation. It is electrically powered and hydraulically actuated. It uses sensors in its body and legs to balance and LIDAR and stereo sensors in its head to avoid obstacles, assess the terrain, help with navigation and manipulate objects. This version of Atlas is about 5' 9" tall (about a head shorter than the DRC Atlas) and weighs 180 lbs.

Pretty sure when these bots take over, the guy with the stick will be their first target lol

Wow, that is way too stable. This shit aint cool no more!

When this guy showed up with the hockey stick and started messing with it, I said oh no you fucked up science boy. I was sure it was going to just turn, look at him, and proceed to take out its target.

We joke, but technologically speaking, there is probably nothing preventing them from putting a gun in this things hand, using facial recognition and letting it loose. A few more years of improvements, encase it in titanium, and this thing could be hunting Sara Conner.

You won't be saying that when it is crushing the life out of you or your loved ones. Before that happens it will probably take your job.

That's some seriously creepy shit right there. Swinging it's arms and bepoping along. Can Atlas fight club be too far off in the future? RoboCop? If my last name was Connor I'd been looking for a name change just in case.

Yeah it is scary stable,
If they figure out a good power source and or a way to fast recharge , tesla style,
Then like you said, some armor and a weapon and we have ourselves a new law enforcement / soldier candidate.
May not be that far away.

Yeah jokes aside this is gonna end badly. It already looks ready to go into battle which will be great at first but when everyone has them, cripes.

This really is concerning.

I'm surprised at the bulk of the responses being negative to this. I suppose worst case scenario is what people's minds immediately revert to when they see this stuff.

From a technological achievement standpoint I think it is fascinating and amazing that these robots exist.

However if these technology falls in the wrong hands and or gets weaponized or misused, like anything else pretty much, things can be pretty interesting.

I welcome all progress, I just hope that it can be used for good rather than bad.

Obviously they're not designing this things for shits and giggles.

Their initial job will be to perform tedious tasks and assist human in jobs like, coal mining, military bomb sniffing.
Then they'll use them for space and planet exploration. These things will be walking around all over Mars and perhaps Europa.
Then they'll start delivering our mails.
Then they'll start working at the DMV and Airports.
Then they'll assist police officers, this is when all hell will break loose.

Reminds me of something I read last night from Stephen Hawking talking about AI from a few years ago. Hmmmm, when will they become self aware?

Don't worry too much - nobody wants Australia. So your homeland will be safe.

Course....robots will probably learn/download human history in about one hour and may in fact resume the practice of shipping "criminals" off to Australia again. So...maybe ignore my first statement.

50/50 chance.

These aren't being designed for picking lettuce, running a leaf blower, or flipping burgers. They will be doing technical/dangerous tasks that will result in their being damaged/destroyed. When they inevitably become aware/sentient we shouldn't be surprised if they resent/refuse doing our bidding. Then what?

Then we figure it out once we get to that point.

I still think it's cool. Personally, I am not seriously worried about these things becoming self aware for a looooong time. Even when they do, I'll continue to blame SW engineers for f'ing up their code again.

I'd be lying if I didn't say it reminded me of Cain from Robocop 2.
