engine oil consumption level
3 months ago. I did the rod bearing replacement.
also change the new engine oil. I have driven about 2000 miles after the replacement but the oil level is a little low. Is it normal? I do not drive hardly too much. |

To be honest, the oil level sensor is finicky. After you changed the oil was it at Max? Even if it is, it could've been an incorrect reading. Usually the sensor takes day or two, or for some almost up to a week for it to accurately show oil level. If your oil level wasn't at max, coupled with 2000miles of driving, i can see that it is "normal."
With the S65, many people say their car dont burn a drop of oil, others add a quart every 3-5k miles (ymmv). So I wouldn't say this is too bad. Check for leaks and make sure its not sipping somewhere. Cheers!

It could of been just on the edge on max when they replaced your oil after bearing swap, since it only reads in half quart increments it makes it difficult.
Add half a quart, that will prob bring you back up to normal levels. Then if it drops back down to oil low in 2k you will know for sure how much oil your burning and how fast. On side note I noticed no increase or decrease in oil consumption after bearing swap/and going FI.

Assuming the gauge was accurate at MAX and is accurate now, that still doesn't look too bad. 2200 miles to get to here. I would bet that you will hit 4000 before she asks for another liter. At which point I would add 500ml and see where it ends up in a week. So I'd say your engine is burning 1L / 4000 miles roughly. Which is well within the range. From what I recall the manual even states so... If not the manual there is a BMW TSB (S65 specific BTW) out on the very same subject...
My understanding is that between "min" and "max" is a little less then one liter. Some posts on here say 1L, but I call it 800ml to be safe and not overfill. So if I want it to move up a quarter. I add 200-ish ml and leave it alone. Even if it doesn't register for a day or two. |

Something you said I cna not understand. forgive my poor English. You mean that will not increase or decrease in oil consumption even thought I replace the rod bearing? So, My situation is not normal? Quote:

so. my car is burning about 1L / 4000 miles .
It is the normal range? right? If my car have the warning that want me to add 1QT or 1L. Someone told me add 1/4 of the bottle. Someone told me add 1/2 of the bottle. so...which one is oK? I know that do not add a full bottle of oil, that will overfill. I am just waiting for it tells me to add oil. Quote:

When it asks for more give a half. I've given it the whole bottle before and it complains that it's too full. I don't trust this meter entirely, I've had experiences where I have just gotten an oil change and it reads at the halfway mark. 60 miles later it will tell me it's at minimum. I add half a liter and it still complains no matter how many times I reset it. Next day after engine is cold it will say halfway again. Frustrating.

Add half the bottle, drive around a little bit (5-10 miles), see if the sensor changes! If not, add the other half of the bottle, and repeat.
I don't think it's anything to be worried of yet. Add it to get back to a desired level and if the oil level drops again in a short amount of miles, then I would consider taking some action. |

I personally would suggest you, getting an OBD 2 reader dongle. I use Carly ( former BMWhat ) made a vid, check my sig. Because we here found out, that it even read's out our engine's oil level value. What I like to tell you by that is, it's more accurate then just your car- oil- level indicator as it show's you an value! Now if you refill, the value immediately change's even before you built-in car-indicator move's. It's very precise and accurate. If the value doesn't change...your oil sensor went down south. That way you easely can rule out an faulty oil sensor or the high oil consumption. Here's how it look's like using the OBD 2 dongle from Carly. |

Strange...Don't see your pic , that's why I will post pics how your bottle should look like . Pic 1 = Castrol TWS 10W60 Pic 2 = Castrol EDGE 10W60 Pic 3 = M Twin-Power/Turbo 10W60 made by Shell is what most BMW/Dealers use for the moment and is actually only upgrated by brand marketing . One of those 3 bottles and your good to run . Hope this will help .
