Start-Up Question - E90 M3
I've only had the car a few days, but had a quick question for the group.
On my 2nd day of ownership I pulled the car into my driveway (its awfully steep) and parked to wash/wax. Usually after I am done with detailing, I will back any of my cars out without the motor having turned over (in case the oil is tilted too far from the pickup by the driveway slope). With my E90, I did this same thing, and when I was back on the level street for a few seconds, I went ahead and fired it up. Initially I got the "car up on the lift" service image in the center display with the exclamation point. However no service codes appeared. Now 2 days later when I start the car, I get a brief picture of a car (not on the lift...just the car), with the chime and exclamation point which go away after 2-3 seconds, however there are no service needed indicators in the I-Drive or shown when cycling through the stalk. The one "weird" thing is that the car seems to take awhile to calculate the oil level each time I start it (even if I simply run into a store for a minute and come back out) where it first shows unable to read with no oil level shown, then thinks about it, then finally displays dead in the middle of the gauge. Is the chime and exclamation point upon startup (and quickly going away) normal? Thanks! |

When you start the car up, is the door open?

Not sure why you saw the car on lift... But I do recall seeing the car picture briefly every time I start up, and it shows the miles till next service underneath. I also get the exclamation point briefly, but like posted above, I think that's for the seat belt.

Not sure. I'll need to be more conscious of whether I am pushing the button prior to shutting the door.

After washing the car along with the car on the lift, it also reset my clock? A little weird, but I cannot imagine the water from my hose was anywhere near powerful enough (and definitely wasn't sprayed in the engine bay) to have any sort of impact... |

If you're opening and closing the doors a lot, the car never goes into sleep mode. I am almost certain you got an "Increased battery discharge" warning at the time you were detailing. Happens if you're playing with your car for a long time..

Yea the car appearing in the beginning is normal. Oil level taking a while to show up is also normal. Like jdamore said, car on the lift probably was a battery warning which could indicate it will be time to get a new one soon.

If it is a battery, a trickle charger will help a great deal when not in use. I used to get that discharge warning all the time, but with the charger, it hasn't appeared in over a year.

I tried the "key in" but not turned over check of the message center and nothing appeared to be stored.
Door is also closed, so the chime is definitely related to the exclamation point which goes away, I would imagine. When you guys first start your cars and cycle to the oil gauge, does it always read as nothing on the gauge with those lines? I thought it would first just go to the last read oil reading while re-reading upon startup. |
