Shell NiTRO Plus

Just noticed Shell's new V-Power NiTRO Plus at the gas station today.

It claims to "help prevent wear in critical engine parts. The new premium fuel also helps protect critical fuel system components from corrosion, destroys gunk left behind by lower quality premium gasoline; it then acts like a barrier to protect against gunk, wear and corrosion."

The price jumped quite a bit as well. Curious if anyone else has seen this around.

What do you think? Grade A marketing bullshit? Or will we see improvements to the wear and performance of our engines?

price jumped? Doubt it's due to NiTro if they're rolling it out to all Shell stations

well considering Shell has a joint sponsorship deal with BMW M, and there's a M6 on the home page of Nitro, the fuel is probably optimized to add 1000 HP to your car and possible help out your rod bearings........

I filled up with this a year ago.

Made my idle bounce. Could have been the ECU adjusting. Who knows.

I then filled up with this gas a week or so ago. No idle bounce, but noticed no difference really.

I'm sure its great gas. For my M3, being in the EU market, its this or BP Ultimate only.

I want to say the price jumped at least 20ยข/gallon vs. Friday. Will confirm though.

Definitely hope I'm pushing 1414 hp with glossy bearings

More than likely a marketing campaign. BMW has recently partnered with Shell and calls it "the only fuel recommended for M series" blah blah. Probably going along with BMW's new Shell Helix oil partnership too.

I noticed this has been available in the EU for a while now, when scouring articles this afternoon. Wonder what took so long for us to get this over here.

Thanks for the input.

Yeah generally speaking, the quality of gas seams to be a bit higher in Europe. Perhaps this is how they try to justify charging nearly double what is charged in North America.

Another thing worth mentioning is where I am at currently anyways, there is usually only two choices as far as non-diesel goes. 95 EU RON (91 us octane) and 98 EU RON (94 us octane). I remember back in North America there was always 3 choices. Regular / Medium and High octane.

Shell seams to be the only exception to the above where I am at. They have the 95 and 98, plus the nitro 100 you initially mentioned.

when i went to fill up at shell. the nitro is the only fuel that is available for 93 oct. I dont think there was a price jump. I cant see it being worse than the last formula. probably wont go out of my way to use it though.

Straight from Shell's website...

"Shell V-Power Nitro+ Unleaded is formulated with powerful cleaning agents designed to protect key fuel system components from gunk and to help remove some existing gunk as you drive.

Shell V-Power Nitro+ Unleaded is also designed to form a protective film on metal surfaces helping prevent corrosion of critical fuel system components."

The underlined statement concerns me. Given the lower bearing clearance on the S65, would an additional protective film reduce it even further and lead to increased wear? I don't know what the viscosity of the said film is, but it could either be much worse for rod bearings or it could be the holy grail.

Edit:
According to the Detroit Free Press, no independent verification has been done of these claims. But "theoretically" its possible.

Is your oil that contaminated with fuel?

Training you to be SELF-indulgent, Ace. You drive an M3 after all, so you're well on the way. Some of us already have 1000+ HP in our (two-car) garages, so indulgence is our specialty.

But I'll do most anything for a Scooby-snack...

Shell should come out with "4WD" differential fluid to help my M3 during those snowy days
