Ok, so my spring broke!
So last night after a seminar with my girlfriend, she sat down in my car, and we heard a loud crash (No, she's not fat ). This morning, I saw that the passenger side spring broke in half. Car has 109K on the odo, but it's still disappointing. Good news is that a while ago I picked up a set of practically brand new oem edc coilovers from someone on here upgrading to kw. Best $350 I've ever spent in my life! So I'll be changing out all four tomorrow. Just a heads up for anyone around this mileage to pick up a spare set.

tell me more of this "seminar with your g/f" you're referring to, and how this may have contributed into said broken spring.
sounds like a swingers party if you ask me...

Seriously though guys, think about the oem spring life span especially if you live in an area with harsh winters, salt, and pot holes.

It was a seminar on data gathering in the world today. Basically, all the information companies are gathering on you, every time you access the internet, or use your smart phone. Kindda scary

Ok, guys lets get back on topic. Fat girl friend or not, this is the first car I've ever had this happen to. I mean ok, so they made it to over 100K, but still, oem springs shouldn't really just snap like that. Least of all, an M3. Any issues with installing factory springs/shocks on an EDC car? I'm hoping I don't need a reprograming.

I've never seen a spring snap... maybe in extreme cases like 300k+ mile cars with original suspension. Usually springs are pretty indestructable.

It's a first time for me to, with thousands of miles on cars. It's not that out of the question when you consider the pot holes, brutal winters, and all that salt. Probably a small crack that had some moisture get in and go through a few freeze thaw cycles. Anyways, I'm glad I don't think like most of the BMW fan boys, because I bought the ultra low mileage spare oem set w/edc, because I was unsure of the oem shock lifespan, and never ran oem shocks for over 60K. Again, best $350 I've ever spent, including shipping! Wouldn't even want to think of what these parts cost oem new.

I'm not all that bothered by the Just as long as this gets out there, and helps inform the community.

I'd say your rod bearings are the reason for it

If it was a rear spring, BMW's have been breaking rear springs with higher mileage, especially in cars driven in salt, since back when the E36 was on the market. Spring sits in a bucket on the LCA, LCA collects crap, crap abrades finish, finish gone allows corrosion, spring wire twists more and more at the weakest point along its length, snap
So info on failure mode, which spring, etc. would be important. What was your spring oil level? Did you get a warning on the dash? Did you send any spring oil off for a used oil analysis? Please help us stop this from turning into another epidemic.
