Is coding basically the same for the E46 as it is for E9x?

I used to have a laptop with DIS, INPA, NCSExpert, etc when I had my E46 M3. I of course sold the laptop when I sold the car, but am now kicking myself in the arse.

Just wondering, is coding (i.e. resetting DCT software, changing factory settings, etc) on the E9x platform the same as on the E46, or is it a total different animal? I wasn't very well versed on coding in the E46, but simply did a ton of reading, and followed instructions, and got by okay, i.e. I was able to do everything I needed to for my car, and helped out some friends with theirs as well.

I was just wondering if I picked up these programs and installed them on my laptop so I had basically the same setup as I had with my E46, could I do coding or did they change the way coding is done since the E9X came about?

Danke schoen.

It's the same process, with some same/some different modules and settings. Although the tools have been updated. You no longer need a virtual machine setup to accomplish the task. Otherwise, it's very much the same approach
