Possible Cause-Rough Shifting Manual Transmission
Failure to change manual trans fluid at 1200 mile break-in service.
This is only speculation on my part, but combining two different thread topics got me thinking. There have been lots of threads on rough shifting, and also some on dealers failing to change manual trans fluid at this service, possibly having it confused with the "lifetime" DCT fluid. Here's a thread on owners having to convince dealers to do this- http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=265139 This thread is a sticky at the top of this section. Some owners had to convince dealers to do it by showing them copies of service bulletins, but this leads me to believe that it wasn't done on many transmissions.I got a new trans on warranty, did the break-in fluid change at my own expense (my friend the mechanic rec'd this) and 6k miles later my trans is really smooth. There's a reason for a break-in fluid change:to remove manufacturing debris. However,if the manufacturing debris sits in there until the 30k service,it could do some damage. What this leads me to thinking is that if you're buying a used manual M3,check and be sure this fluid was changed at the break-in service. If you think your trans is bad enough to make a warranty claim, look into this.It could only strengthen your claim if you can show BMW failed to perform this required maintenance.
