How is car in production during plant shutdown?
My production started this last weekend the 9th I saw on the BMW site. I called the hotline and it says car is suppose to be complete by 25th. How does it take two weeks? I know there is a plant shut down from the 11th to 18th. Do they start on the car and then leave it sit for a week during the shut down?

The build was originally scheduled for wk35 then move to wk32. My CA also contacted me with this update. Initial hotline status was completion on Aug-13. Today it states Aug-14 completion. I'll see what happens tomorrow and post an update.

plant shut down means plant shut down. cars stop on the line and resume right where they left off. I think july build cars have the most errors. summer. day dreaming about 5 weeks off following month. biergarten every evening. lol
after the break everyone is reset and ready to work.

But what happens is there are buffers in the production line between steps to ensure a problem in one area does not affect another area. So the car will be welded up in the body shop within a few hours, then go into the buffer storage are. After a specific time the car will leave the buffer area for the paint shop. After painting it will again go into a buffer storage area before going into final assembly. The paint to assembly buffer at the Rosslyn BMW plant is said to usually be just over 48hours production. After final assembly certain cars also go into Audit bays that delay their "complete" status.

But they batch them toget by paint color so they dont waste paint and cleaning solution by only painting 1 or 2 individual colors every week. At the Rosslyn plant they usually to do Individual 3 Series once a month when Individual is available. The interior bits are fitted on the normal production line by the normal employees. Only special once off 7 Series ect with hand made parts get their interiors fitted separately from the normal production line. But these cars are very scarece and hugely expensive.

Karussel, how is that possible. Are you suggesting that everyone who has been promised a week 35 and 36 production week will be moved back to week 37 and 38 and so on and so on.............

I think they can figure out around the holiday break. been doing it for a few years now. Every german manufacturer deals with this.

My car has been finished since Monday. Hotline keeps saying, "waiting to be released to the carrier". Gonna be annoyed if they finished before closing the plant but wait 2 weeks to get it on it's way to the port.

Oh yeah, a bunch of spiders and bees and shit will settle in the incomplete car while it sits on the assembly line. I bet a bunch of birds will dump all over the interior, too. You're going to get the first F80 with the spidersbeesfeathersandbirdshit package.

BMW did not pause production in 2013. They just released their Q2 numbers and YoY sales continue to be strong. I was told they weren't pausing production in 2014 either.

My build changed status overnight. It went from the body shop to paint shop with estimated completion Aug-14. That suggests production is not shutdown or the gremlins are operating the robots...

BMW often keep a new model line open during "shutdown" time if that model was released close to the time or demand is very high.
Here is a article when they and Mercedes did it last year Quote:
