What to do with the 09 Z4...
I am moving into an apartment with no garage, but there would be open outdoor parking for two of my cars...
I have one year old '09 Z4 with 2700 miles and '05 Escalade EXT AWD with 25K miles. I have a loan with Z4. Refinanced at $100 off a month with lower interest rate. No loan with Escalade. I could... 1. Sell the Z4 (Tough in Alaska, nearing to Winter...No hits on CL during Spring and Summer). Tried surveying the local German car forum, but no hits so far. 2. Put the Z4 in a unheated indoor storage for about $175/mo. with a indoor car cover for the winter. 3. Put the winter tires on and drive bravely with stock suspension. (I have 19" Performance wheels with RFTs with M-Suspension package) 3. Somehow put on a lift kit to bring up the the height where I can clear the snow and ice with the winter tires. 4. Trade the car in and lose half of the value. The car was MRSP at 65K. Trade in ranges from $31K to $33K. 5. Slap on the outdoor car cover and disconnect the battery. Or I have to see if I can get an extension cord to have a trickle charger hooked up to the Z4 outside. 6. Trade both the Z4 and the Escalade EXT. The Z4 is worth $31-33K at trade-in and the Escalade between $21K-23K. Then, get a new vehicle that has a high ground clearance and comfortable like the Escalade EXT with the 4-corner air ride suspension. I prefer the AWD over Auto-4X4 for the smooth ride. I would appreciate your opinion about this. Thanks much! |

I know it's the most obvious one, but I would go with 2 or possibly 5. As long as it doesn't put too much strain on your wallet. I think it's ridiculous to "give it away" for 31k. I would be pissed off knowing someone got one for that cheap. Is there any reason you can't move into an apartment that does have a garage?

Leave it outside. Disconnect the battery and bring it inside or leave it outside. Start the car up for a little bit every couple weeks.
We leave an 85 911 targa outside all winter with a cover on. No harm no foul. Just drive it when theres no snow (which is probably never in alaska during the winter). |

According to KBB your car is worth a lot more down in the lower 48. Like 10,000 more then you are looking at. Talk to a dealer/broker about buying it wholesale then ship down here, You'll walk with 5,000 to 8,000 more.

High real estate prices here in Alaska, a decent apartment with a garage runs from at least $1500-$2000 a month...
Hardly any foreclosures here because the economy is isolated from the Continental U.S due to geography.... The cost of living here is high, but you have healthy job market as well as good pay... I am not willing to pay that much for an apartment where I could get a mortgage for the same... Thanks folks! I will keep your suggestions in mind... |
