Actually, he left the show in 79 and died in 82.
While the original cast is still the best to me, there is a lot to be said for the late 80s/early 90s cast with Mike Meyers, Dana Carvey, Dennis Miller, Phil Hartman, Jan Hooks, et al - there was a lot of great stuff in those years as well. And while the show has had some flashes of brilliance the last couple of years (some of the digital shorts, for example), it also has a ton of crap (some of the digital shorts, for example). Anything that wasn't hysterical, or total crap, has been on the low end of the mediocre scale . . . And I have to say it, as I do any time I comment on SNL - Keenan Thompson is NOT FUNNY AT ALL. Fire him, for the love of god . . . |

The only highlight of newer SNL's for me : Roberts Smigel's TV Funhouse bits and his "The Ambiguously Gay Duo" series in particular

At least they toned it down with their gay crap (guys kissing wildly, passing each other food, and crap like that which crossed the line from funny to disgusting), but yeah, it's mostly not funny anymore. The Eddie Murphy/Phil Hartman/etc. days were great indeed.
We just 'DVR' it and usually go thru it in less than 1/2 hour. |
