2020 Porsche 911 Turbo S

2020 Acura NSX

2021 Lamborghini Huracan Evo

2020 812 Superfast

Jaguar XJ220

All well under 500k and all way faster than the LFA. The LFA still sounds better than all of them though IMO. LoL

I think 812 Superfast sounds better than LFA but this is of course subjective.

MOST people base their car choices on speed alone. Obviously Jeremy Clarkson has driven WAY faster cars than the LFA and his choice of it as the best speaks volumes.

Having said that, i'm sure my GTR will outperform any stock exotic out in the market today. It also means that I know there are cars out there I can appreciate, even if they are slower, regardless of price.

No, I agree with you. LFA is definitely a great car, especially a great collector's car because it is so extremely rare. If I already had ten exotics and tens of millions left to spend, I would just go ahead and buy one. If I can only afford 1-2-3 exotics and I actually plan to drive and service them, LFA will not be my choice.

I am so the opposite. While the cars I mentioned are really fast, as most "Supercars" are, I go for what I think is visually appealing. To me, if its fast but is butt ugly I'd take a much slower car that looks better. I got shit on IG for saying "But its still a Prius" for someone that posted a LS swapped Prius I think it was. They were like "its faster than your stupid coupe," and I had to remind them that I didn't really GAF. I don't care that its a wierd sleeper and may be faster than my G37 Coupe...but my car will ALWAYS look better without question. My coupe suits my needs and is practical-ish. LOL. But everyone has their reasons for choosing a car I suppose. I go for looks to start

my criteria for an exotic are:

1) driving experience needs to be absolutely visceral (doesn't need to be the fastest but quick acceleration adds to the experience)
2) projected depreciation should be minimal or even negative
3) needs to have a sporty-spartan yet high quality interior
4) needs to sound like an exotic (difficult with many turbos turbos but expensive titanium aftermarket exhausts really help)
5) important: calculate and plan the service/maintain/repair costs
6) exterior looks: I like both supercar looks (Aventador etc.) but also more understated looks (992 Turbo S etc.)

LFA will be a $1 million car in few years (sooner if EV take over happens earlier than expected). The Nurburgring version is already approaching that figure. The amount of engineering that went into LFA won't be repeated likely ever due to the cost. It's a supercar that requires only regular maintenance, and probably outlast all modern supercars. People pay >500K for Singer Porsches (which would be one of my choices). LFA is a bargain in comparison.

So those LFAs are getting scheduled maintenance outlined by the manufacturer, right? It does not seem they are there for unscheduled visits due to reliability issues or design flaws.

That's a bit of an interesting price point. I have tons of answers for $200-250k and for $1mm+, but not a lot around $500k. The really desirable stuff is above that price point, and the more common stuff is below that price point. I don't see a ton of value in something like the F8 - I would much rather a 458 Speciale or 430 Scud. It's not just that I am depreciation averse, I like the limited production/special build cars so much more (TDF over F12, GTO over 599, etc).

Modern stuff:
LFA
812 GTS
LP640 manual
997 GT3 RS 4.0 or 997 GT2 RS

Older stuff:
Singer / Guntherwerks
Porsche 962 / Le Mans car
1990s-2000s F1 car
Group B car

All of the truly collectible Ferraris are above $500k, same for Pagani, some Porsches, and esoteric stuff like EB220s, XJR15s, etc where a lot of value could be found not long ago. That $500k question about 6-7 years ago would have been really interesting (F50, CGT, etc). Dream car is CGT and they become less and less attainable each year. At one point, they were barely over $300k where I could have realistically afforded one in 5-10 years, and now they are just gone. $1mm for a car is a pipe dream.

With supercars and hypercars, it is best to assume most will drop in value. Going into ownership with the right expectations will allow one to enjoy a car for what it is and what it is built for.

For collection purposes, it would be a safer bet to go with a Ferrari and a limited edition one to protect from depreciation. I inquired about the 812 VS and was rejected (must own a min of 2 V12s). Ferrari has found the proper balance between supply and demand to protect valuations across the special edition cars.
