Just above the listing of those online, there is that heading why is it called that?

It tells you whats going on. Whoose online right now, forum stats and birthdays......

Wouldn't "Statistics" or something to that affect be more appropriate?

Its a default wording used by vBulletin software, you'll see all forums have that same category with the same wording... Its just the way its setup from the software makers.
