Value shopping high end sports cars

With regards to some of the more limited or special edition sports cars or exotics out there, what would you say are the best values out there, or what would you consider a long term keeper if they fell into a price you were comfortable with?

675LT seems like a "relative" deal in the $240k range. Of course it's still a boat load of money but perhaps special enough to warrant the price.

I've lusted over the .1 GT3 RS, but previously at over $200k+ I don't think I could ever choose it over options. Now with prices creeping towards the $150-$160k mark, wondering if this is perhaps the best bang for the buck at the moment?

AMG GTR seems like a worthy contender. But priced similarly to a GT3 RS, don't know if I could pick this over it. The GTS I test drove was a blast, and the GTR does look amazing in green!

Cayman GT4, at under $100k I imagine is boat loads of fun and market seems steady on these.

And then you have the Speciale and Pista but those definitely wouldn't fall under the category of this title unfortunately.

There are others I've missed obviously, but trying to keep this to relatively newer cars, say no older than 5 years. And I'm all over the board with the pricing categories I know, but always good to have an open mind me thinks! I know I left out Japanese and American cars, but feel free to chime in with those.

anything special edition will hold value from the exotic brands (except McLaren) The 675 LT has lost a ton of value. It was the same price as a speciale when new, and now they are worth 250k while special's are worth 400k and holding steady. McLaren continually shoots themselves in the foot by making the next car 10x better than the previous model.

The .1 GT3RS is a good deal right now. But I'd honestly rather have a manual .2 GT3 (they are both in the high 100s to 200k range). The main reason the 991.1 GT3 tanked was because of this. It also dropped the 997 GT3s as those thought they had the last manual gt3 Porsche would make.

AMG GTR maybe... I've heard rumblings of a GTR black series coming out though. A better buy would be the SLS since they're are far fewer of them and you get gullwing doors. SLS Black series prices have been holding verrry strong.

Cayman is a solid buy and will hold value (Assuming the next cayman is turbo)

458s are holding steady for clean ones, last NA v8 from Ferrari. pretty reliable too. I've had mine 3 years now.

AM V12 vantage manual. (aston isn't doing manual NA v12s anymore)

I don't think there is any Japanese cars holding value other than the lexus lfa, supra, and rx7. the nsx was a flop. used GTR prices have been pretty steady, at least a lot steadier than M3s.

Best "value" sports car out there right now is the 991.1 GT3.

90% of the same car as the 991.2 GT3, at 75% of the price. Plus has the potential to be one of the last NA cars and handles the road like nothing else out there. I truly think history will be kind to the 991 gen cars.

Thanks for the feedback guys and appreciate the video link. That was an interesting watch and I agree for the most part with him. I guess I should have added I'm not necessarily looking at cars that will appreciate in value. I know in reality that's a wishful proposition and really only limited to truly rare cars. When I say value, I'm looking at cars that were marked up considerably over MSRP or were at MSRP for a while with miles and have come back down to earth and in line with typical depreciation. Hence the list I proposed.

I'd say for me the two cars that are most enticing under say $170k would be the AMG GTR and .1 GT3 RS. I think a '18 GTR can be had for close to $150k now but I'm sure those will be $100k in a couple years, as Humdizzle pointed out with the BS and Pro on the horizon. It seems to get comparable performance though, you gotta be over $200k easily!

.1 GT3 RS, not sure how much more prices will drop on these, but I see a lot of them for sale. I think I see more RS's than regular GT3's listed? Perhaps this would be the better long term buy of the two to enjoy without losing your shorts if and when one decided to sell/trade. Not sure if $150's is a realistic number to shoot for by 3rd/4th quarter of this year though?

Doug is right on the money in that video and is talking about something every enthusiast should take to heart.

I think a major story in the next couple years in enthusiast circles is going to be the collapse of the secondary/speculation market bubble for Porsches. A lot of people who's master plan is to buy a GT series and drive it "for free" or even drive it and then flip it for profit are going to be caught underwater.

I dont where spec buying will go but its no different than many other supercars, look at what the La F did and so many others, thats not unique to GT cars..But.....Porsche has already won the enthusiasts battle by reviving the MT in GT cars. There is only one brand that has said we support the drivers of the world that understand that the experience of shifting gears is more important than almost any other attribute, all other things equal.
So anyone with the cash can go out and buy any new super car made, and jump right behind the wheel without any requirement to actually know how to drive because of the lack of the 3rd pedal. Im actually shocked that Ferrari has abandoned their roots so far to go so hollywood but thats their issue. Porsche has rightfully acknowledged that its the engagement that an MT requires that ultimately allows one to become one with the experience, and what value true enthusiasts place in this is to be determined.

Definitely the .1 3RS over the chunky Merc. Best deal out there for a limited number track monster. The .1 GT3 is a great car also. It’s just not as special.

You can get them for under $50k! Just look around on cars.com. It's crazy how cheap they are.


OP: Any special edition Ferrari is the way to go if you want to mitigate any loss.
McLaren's are a tough one for sure. They still lose a ton of value and if anything breaks, ANYTHING, it's a fortune!

Best bang for the buck for sure is the .1 GT3. Phenomenal car for the money.
Or, you could go a little bit older GT3 (997) and get a manual car. They seem to have leveled off and are holding their value at this point rather well. In the future, they should rise a bit as I believe the 997 will end up being the performance/drivers car bargain that the entire car market is looking for.
