Brake job for 2000 528i - Did I get scammed?
I took my daughters 2000 528i to local shop to find out why one fr brake was squeaking when stopping. $675 dollars later the shop removed all 4 rotors and "deglazed" them. He told me he took them off and sanded with palm sander. He also replaced all 4 pads even though I know they had less than 20k miles. For this much money, I would have just replaced all the rotors and pads myself for less. To make it worse, please see an image of the rear pads he put on and charged me $95/axle for. They look old and used to me. Looks like he sanded them down and on the outside pad, he sanded them on the long edge. I took these photos about 2 weeks and 100 miles after he said he installed "new" pads. What do you think?? [Oh, btw, they still squeak]
I posted both images on my smugmug site: https://ericcohen.smugmug.com/BMW-pads/ |

Thanks for the empathy I told mechanic I would not pay for this part of the work. Do you agree there is NO way these are new pads with 100 miles on them? No idea why he sanded them down. I assume I should now replace these with proper new pads. I'll do the work myself from here out...

You could measure the thickness versus the new ones and I bet they are half the thickness. BMW pads are pretty meaty when new. No reason to ever sand pads backing plates unless you wanted to fool someone into thinking they were new. I personally have milled the faces of pads to cut a new surface on them to bed to rotors and remove glaze but no shop would do that...They would just install new. I don't think hand sanding a rotor to break the glaze is correct either. I'd replace them unless you have sufficient thickness and a good machine shop turn them. (personally I think turning rotors is false economy.) Next time the start squeaking do 5-6 70mph to 20 HARD stops and then drive gently for a ten minutes. That will break the glaze many times.

Good opportunity for a DIY brake/rotor change and an even better time to teach your daughter to do it.

Wow, lol that is horrible
What you could've also done is buy the most abrasive pads (race/track pads) and run them through until the rotors look freshly machined, then install new pads. I did that to eliminate some brake and steering wheel shimmy issues too |

Uhmmm, 'glazing' causing squeaking? Is this a BMW thing? Because in the rest of the automotive world disk brake 'squeaking' is caused by vibration between the brake pad and the piston. Shims sometimes help, so does a bit of the right kind of grease.

Just redid my fronts and rears using an FCPeuro package on my 135i. Your 528 should be easier...and way cheaper:
https://www.fcpeuro.com/BMW-parts/52...79&m=20&page=1 From here on is 135i info. https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/bmw...116778647ktfr3 FCP euro has lifetime WEAR warranty.....yes if you wear out a disc or pad they will replace for cost of shipping. I doubt that I would do since I think wear items are on me but it is good to know. They are simple to do with no difficult issues at all. You need a T40 torx for the front pads. A 10mm hex for the front calipers. Hex for the rotor retaining screw. (maybe a 6mm? I forget) Rear you need 15mm (5/8ths works), a punch and hammer to drive out the pins. Piece of cake. While you are down there bleed the brakes. Good training for the kids....pumping the brakes so dad can bleed them. I have to say the 135i front calipers are light and gorgeous when off and cleaned up.

Did you approve that work to be done?
I would never approve anyone that recommended machining rotors. Then again, I probably would have just fixed the problem myself. You could have done new brakes all around for less than $300 with quality parts.

I did not approve the work. I told him to look at the front brake that's squeaking and let me know what he finds/thinks. I agree that for the money he charged I would have replaced all 4 rotors and pads. The FR PageID pads are new, but the rear JURID pads are old and sanded down (he charged me $95 for these pads). Total ripoff. I paid for some of the work and sent him registered letter that I did not approve all the brake work. I still overpaid and chalked it up to learning my lesson about this shop. Any good suggestions for rotors and pads? I recently re-did the brakes on my Cherokee with Powerstop and I'm not sure I like them.
