Is it just the driver air bags or also the passenger on the E92?? Count on it taking two years. Last year after waiting 6 months I got the passenger airbag in my E46 replaced but I am STILL waiting on the drivers airbag.

Thanks. It is very clear now from the PDF files. However, I am still skeptical as previous BMW Takata recall involved much older BMW and now newer ones are affected. Other manufacturers are even recalling passenger side airbags as far as I remember and read. It is not clear to me when onwards did Takata fixed the problem and from which year of manufacture it is absolutely clean.

Q30. Will BMW give me a loaner vehicle until an interim or final repair part is available?

If a notified customer requests a loaner vehicle and replacement parts are not available, BMW has authorized its centers to provide or assist customers with alternate transportation, subject to availability.
Does this mean when you get the letter you can demand a free loaner even if parts aren't available yet?

Checked VIN, nothing yet. However, I expect it to take the IT guys a while to sort this out considering how large the numbers are, and a year to get parts.

Jesus, what rock have you been under! :

I wish I could know what supplier provided the airbag for my '14 320 and if it's just a matter of TIME before any car with a Takata bag using the questionable propellant is recalled!

Noticed a sweeping recall of Mercedes models, but strangely enough the GLK was one of few models NOT recalled... Comforting, somewhat since I DD one.
Why you choose to be rude and not even respond to the question - is beyond me.

I never understood people like you, with a need to belittle others to make themselves feel a certain way.

Since you asked, I've been busy running a tech company and just closed a contract with an estimated contract value of half a billion. That's the rock I've been under.

I prefer to get my news from kind enthusiasts that have shared passions as they relate to my daily drivers - my M3, M5, X5M and 750i.

You, sir, don't seem to be a kind enthusiast. The response I got from true member on this thread was the perfect cliff notes response I was looking for.

Now, please politely piss off.

You'd get the new airbag internals, and maybe a new center cover (where the BMW emblem is), but that's it.
I wonder why not a new steering wheel? You have to destroy the wheel to remove the airbag? You punch 2 holes in the back of the wheel to remove the airbag? Seems since my steering wheel will be damaged it should be replaced as well.

The holes are already there. Not sure what you mean you are destroying the steering wheel to take out airbag.

It would be a good time to replace the steering wheel trim though. Mine is peeling bad.

If someone damages your steering wheel removing the airbag, they're doing something very wrong! The holes are already there.

+1 in fact they are so small you didn't even notice them, no need to change steering wheel

Just checked the site and my 2011 e83 135i is NOT on the list. I guess it's some and not all.

Takata has been making airbags since the late 1980s. My understanding of the issue is that it stems for the propellant itself. Until the late 1990s, Takata used sodium azide, which was very stable but potentially toxic. When I worked as an insurance adjuster, a lot of my clients would have a "sunburn" from airbag deployments in older cars on their face and forearms. It was actually a mild chemical burn that would go away in a few days. In the late 1990s, Takata switched to ammonium nitrate, which I understand to be less toxic (but still toxic - you definitely don't want to replace your Tabasco with this stuff), and cheaper to produce - bonus! It was, however, less stable if mishandled or stored incorrectly. One or more of Takata's production facilities effectively ignored quality control and safety regulations, resulting in inflator units that were quite literally ticking time bombs, prone to producing explosive shrapnel in the event of an accident. Before the recall, Takata produced about 1/5 of all airbags in the world, so this is shaping up to be the largest automotive recall in history.

Ammonium Nitrate,
Anyone remember Terry Nickles?

I understand that an air bag needs to inflate at a very fast rate, but ...

Oklahoma City?

Anyways, the ammonium nitrate in airbags is typically combined with calcium salt. Old model aircraft used to fly on a similar fuel, from what I've read.

Well, it says, "2007?2013 3-series and M3 coupe and convertible"

So I'm pretty sure it's talking about both the Non-M3 coupes / convertibles and the M3 coupe / convertible

So does anyone know the steps to take for a US M3 that has been imported into Germany?

EDIT: I just got a call from BMW in Munich to say that the recalls are WORLDWIDE. They're not limited to US market vehicles anymore.

Now, I'm not sure if it's specifically only the M3 that's worldwide, but the person on the phone referred to the Airbag recall and not my specific case, so I would assume so.

I'm pretty sure I read they replace just the inflator. The parts shortages are such that TRW has started production on a form-fit-function replacement for the Takata inflator. Some car companies are not sourcing the replacements from Takata because the replacement part from Takata has been found to be defective. Car & Driver reported that a few weeks ago.

They probably won't. Honda, who was their biggest customer has dropped them.
