I wonder who the designer is? Is it that young chap Calvin Luk who designed the X1 too? He sure has a bright future, whether this car was his penmanship or not!

RWD and M2. Now BMW might get my money.
With the current crop of cars, there is no chance of separating me from $55-65 large.

Right now there is nothing much better than my 8 year old E90 335 Sport.
Yeah, some new technology but nothing worth the incremental $40+ large to play.
My thoughts exactly

This is a UKL car, so yes, non-xDrive models will be FWD.

I think this really looks great. I am wondering if this is going to be branded as a 1 Series or 2 Series. If the latter, I would expect it to be referrred to as a Gran Coupe, though it doesn't necessarily look the part. This is still a concept though, so we'll see.

Although what we enthusiasts all really want a sub-3 RWD sedan, I think this car still has potential to be great even sitting on the UKL chassis. However a performance-focused AWD system (like the one you'd find used for an EVO X, for example) is absolutely essential. If they limit this to a proper M model, well, so be it, but it needs to be there for this to have any sort of winning value proposition against a WRX or Focus RS. Well I suppose it will have the WRX beat handily in the looks department in any case.

Highly anticipating what the inevitable S48 engine will bring to the table as well. The Mercedes M133 has the bar set very high.
UKL has been quoted as RWD compatible so it's not dead in the water but I wouldn't bet against you on it being FWD.

Real shame.

My gf has just bought an M135i and it'll be a damn shame if it's the last "small" fast RWD BMW (excepting the M2) make.

Scott is there a reason this is considered for the Far East market only right now, roads and space are pretty tight here in their too.

See BMW. You use the 2-Series moniker, now I'm thinking this should have been what the 2-Series should have looked like and would follow the rest of the coupes in terms of design due to the amount of curves used for the body vs. the more box-like appearance of the current 2-Series.

The concept looks really nice, and i sure hope this will be available in EU also.

As for the space inside, it's not intended to be spaceious, it's the size of a E46.
Then this is the size you'll get in the rear seats.
It's perfectly fine, now produce this little car with RWD and a B38.

At the moment it is officially for China. But I could see other markets eventually seeing this car especially when their compact segment prefers a boot rather than a hatch. It all comes down to acceptance but the car is being developed for a global response so it could be a possibility.
If it was to be introduced in say a market like North America it would be xDrive and eDrive only. But Europe would probably feature the full engine range from the entry three cylinder up to the M Performance 300+ PS 4 Cylinder.

Really like this... 3 series and 4 series are just too big for driving around the city. This will be perfect.

It is staggering, just WOW

Just make it RWD, make a 2 door version, make an M out of it, it will be easily the best looking and selling Bimmer ever IMHO

The "compactness" makes it brutal, sporty and fast looking.....

This is just so needed, smaller, compact, cars, the kind off cars that made BMW in the past, the goodwill they created in the past, but was lost with only bigger and heavier models...........it is about time to look back, back to the future........back to the roots, back to the origine of species.

Real shame.
Technically any platform that supports AWD is RWD compatible. That means that the majority of platforms supporting FWD vehicles today could be used as the basis for a RWD vehicle too. Yet none are. Particularly telling is that all manufacturers who currently offer both FWD and RWD vehicles have specific platforms for each of those drivetrain types, even when some of the products offered across the two are the exact same size.

That's a pretty creative way of interpreting "I wouldn't bet against you on it being FWD".

I hope this engine comes soon. The new X2 would seem to be a worthy recipient. An X2 xDrive35i would sell well in the US.
