I would check your insurance rates on both cars. I think you will find the M3 is cheaper. Still a great car

Please, no..

Im sorry but im being completely honest. 17 year old children don't need 400-500hp machines. My advice would be grab a 328i or a 530i. Sorry

I agree with lyonracing. I got into enough trouble with 160hp. I highly suggest getting a 530i or a 330i to start. After you have some time behind the wheel go to a 335 or 135 for a couple years. Still alive? Now it's M3 time, after some driving school.

Dude, I'm 17 also. I was very interested in getting an older m5, but I checked insurance... It would cost us nearly $200 a month for decent coverage on a vintage ///M car at our age. Yesterday I just went ad bought a 1992 525i, which is what I recommend you do for 5 reasons:
1-same chassis (you could literally put some parallel wheels and badges and you'd have a convincing 'm5'
2-I average 23 mpg in mine
3- the car is still pretty fast, but don't make the same mistake I did by getting an automatic. Buy a 5-speed
4-muuuuch lower insurance costs and repair cost.
5- extra $$$ that you can use to tastefully mod your car.

Wow I just wrote you an article, and it got deleted on accident
But to sum it up, manual gives u the option to drive conservatively in low RPMs to save gas, or drive aggressively, with higher performance than an automatic transmission. Sorry to be so breif, if u have questions just message me.

Fair enough. I've had many cars, sport, luxury, touring, practical, and a mix of both auto and stick transmissions. I don't think having an E39 with auto is a mistake. As with any choice, it all depends on what you like and want. I test-drove both auto and manual transmissions on the E39 before I made my purchase, and I don't regret going with the automatic - it suits what I wanted from my bimmer. It is the smoothest shifting auto I've ever owned, and it is effortless to drive in city traffic. On the other hand, our Z4 has a 6 speed manual, and it is a thrill to drive. There are many who would say that is a mistake and that I should have purchased the Z4 with the 7 speed DCT. It all comes down to personal preference.

Fongngai - enjoy your car!!

M5s engines have a known issue with the secondary air channels is fouling. A very expensive repair!

That's going to be hard to read for the OP, but hey, we were all 17 once and we know what kind of stupid shit we can do. Or did.

Aside from the high cost of insurance, the M5 gets horrible gas mileage. It is also extremely expensive to repair. The M3 gets slightly better gas mileage and will also cost a lot to repair and maintain.

Find a nice E39 or E46 with a manual transmission and you will have almost the same car, it will be a LOT cheaper to insure, maintain and own.

Actually, IMHO, unless you are rich, no teenager can really afford to own a BMW. You really need to know what you are getting yourself into. These are very expensive cars to keep on the road.

I second that. I baby my E39, and it still costs between $1K and $2K per year for stuff. Suspension, brakes, winter wheels & tires, gaskets, headlights, cooling, etc. Luckily, maintenance hasn't been all at once, so I've spread it over the past 6 years that I've owned the car.

Carchitect - Speaking of pics, let's see some of your 525i. Saw a small pic on your profile. Is that yours?

If I have a pic of it on my phone, is there a way to upload it via the bimmerpost app, or do I have to do it on my desktop?

Oh, I got on the computer and saw what I had as my profile pic. That was definitely not my car; I had put that as my pic before I even got my car. Here's a link to a picture of my bone stock 525i haha.

Nice. Nothing wrong with stock. Looks in great shape. Once you get the digital image onto your PC (or wherever you have your browser) then you can use the 'insert image' button on the editor to include the pic(s) in your post.

I prefer M5

M5 for sure. more extra space can make small. not vice versa, that is, small space can become bigger. For your reference~
