Am I the only one that thinks the brake dust is excessive?

I've owned many high performance cars over the years and I've never experienced the amount of brake dust I'm getting from my new 328xi. Last weekend I spent several hours washing, claying, and waxing the car only to have significant brake dust covering the wheels 2 days later after less than 50 miles of driving. By the time I had a chance to clean the car (one week later) the wheels were completely covered. Is this normal and, if so, will it get better with time? I realize that increased stopping power comes with additional brake dust as a trade-off, but this is beyond what I've ever experienced before.

Welcome to BMW !

I'll get better a little, but the OE brakes do shed a lot of dust.
Being my 4th BMW (and also wife owning a Mini), I'm not used to this.
I use it as a reminder that it's time to wash it again !

~ ok i found additional information on the 'dust-free' akebono (euro ceramic) with part numbers for the f30 & f31 ~ 320/328/428(xi or i) cars:

eur 1561a (fronts) - includes electronic wear sensor

eur 1613 (rears)

~ on order: butch at the tire rack is assisting with the order and drop shipping from akebono (stay tuned)...

to all: i have used these pads on several cars in the past with great success (dust-free, no noise and twice the pad life of oem pads).

Manufacture Info: European car owners across North America now have a brake pad solution that will keep their wheels virtually free from dust and provide the European stopping power they expect.
The use of highly advanced ceramic brake pad technology allows Akebono’s “EURO” pad line to provide excellent stopping power while extending rotor life and virtually eliminating brake dust.

Before I took delivery last July of the e92m3, I had my dealer put CoolCarbon pads all around. They have been great!
Better than OEM bite and cold/hot grip, low dust!

When I'll get tired of washing, will get the CoolCarbon too.
Heard great things about those pads... Way back in the E90 days.

I just went to BMW to talk about my obnoxious squeaky brakes and while i was telling them the problem i took a quick glimpse at my brakes and instead of it being blue it was all black! But i got an appointment for them to fix the noise so i guess i have that going for me.

I second the Akebono's!

We had the Akebono's on our old W211 Benz and they were, without a doubt, the best brakes that you can buy for a German sedan.

They were installed, bedded, and from then on, Never squealed (there isn't a BMW ON THE PLANET that can say that if using OEM pads), dusted Very little, and seemed to last forever (we had gotten almost 50k miles on them).

I'm thinking of doing the same thing on ours because the brakes just work that well!

By the way, Sonax wheel cleaner works Fantastic on brake dust!
