M5 vs. Ghibli

I am considering purchasing an M5 (and strongly leaning towards it). I've considered others such as audi s6/s7 (rs7 is too expensive), Tesla Model S, E63, and the Maserati Ghibli.

I'm not a fan of the Audi exterior design and have completely ruled them out. After spending some time with the e63, though i like the idea of awd and it is very luxurious, i feel as though the m5 is "sportier" and ruled it out. I also prefer the looks of the M5 more.

The Ghibli, on the other hand, is one sexy car. personal opinion only, i find it to be the best looking of the group. There is also something very exotic and unique about an italian car.

Does anyone have any experience or thoughts comparing the 2 vehicles (m5 to ghibli)? Unfortunately, the closest dealership is 2 1/2 hours away so a random test drive is not the most feasible.

No personal experience, but I just happened to have read a Car and Driver review on the train last night that trashed the Ghibli. Basically said the looks are the only good thing. Reviewer made the analogy that Maserati rushed the car to market without letting it fully bake - it needs to be put back in the oven for a bit more. Based on this, I would assume much better build quality and higher end materials in the M5.

Here's the best and most honest review I've seen so far. Done by KBB.

Looks kinda good, sounds fantastic, but really a poorly designed constructed car overall. I'm still dumbfounded as to how they got a Twin Turbo V6 to sound that good though. I mean that's the same setup as a GTR, but the Ghibli sounds SO Italian. I heard one in real life before too and man does it sound so damn good for a Twin Turbo V6 Engine. How did you do it Maserati?!?!?!?!?!!!!

Ouch!

Although, in fairness, most Mazis look great and sound great but don't drive all that great.

Before the M5, i almost went for a maser QP GT. While waiting for the arrival of the new QP, that finally I didnt take as the design looked to me deceiving, as too oriented to Chinese market plus excesive price, I checked the Ghibli (didn't test drive it because was a demo car not available for road test).

The interior design was totally deceiving, and is what made me go directly for the M.
Materials / plastics looking as cheap as any Fiat, so (thankfully) my head pushed harder than my heart, and I even didnt wait for a test version.

Yeah the Italian Chrysler 300 looks good. But it is pretty cheaply made when you get into the details.

maserati been/is/will always be cheap ferrari wanna be
there is nothing good about this car except for exhaust noise! italians do know how to do magic with exhaust

even interior of m5 with just extended leather feels more luxury than ghibli, just my 2cents

Others you didn't mention: G6MC and Panamera. I'm still happy I went with the M5. Of those you listed, and the ones I added, I would place the Ghibli at the bottom.

Oh, and unless you're talking about bare bones, an RS7 isn't going to be much, if any, more than an M5 (since you mentioned it).

Say this out loud to yourself:

"I own a Ghibli."

Regardless of how great the Maserati is, saying that out loud just makes me feel like I lost an IQ point. And I would fear that every time I said it, someone would follow with "Gesundheit!"

I had a Maserati GTS before the M5 and I would describe the Maserati as "All show & no go" and the M5 as "All go & no show".....

The Maserati made a great sound and looks lovely and got lots of attention, but the gearbox and Media system were an old design with limitations.

Just took my F10 M5 against and RS5, and lets just say the guy riding in his shiny blue
Audi was very upset when my grey, elegant, M5 destroyed it 0-80. Same thing for the Tesla S, but the guy was respectable and gave we the thumbs up. Haven't seen an E63 but from what my dad told me (Like father like son - M5's are in my blood) he took one 0-100 and pulled it out.

Please test drive before you make an opinion. Agree that they look good, sound good, and drive crap. There have been few cars I "hated" after driving...the Maserati GranTurismo was one of them. Utter disappointment as a drivers car.

Also, the Ghibli was completely underwhelming visually in person IMO.

Sorry - just not a fan of the brand. If it's attention you are looking for, then go buy a used Aston DBS, lambo gallardo, ferrari 430, etc. for same money.

[EDIT]: Missed the last post. Congrats on the M5 order!

That Review hurts !!
Good grief
This guy is hilarious!
"Even if different means worse"!! He actually said that

I love the car looks

But sat in it in the mall once and interior didn't speak to me at all!! Ergonomics are just plain wrong!!
Looks better than M5! Yes
Interior wise not even close to M5!
Performance wide apples to oranges!

I went fairly basic with it - had to keep the Mrs. happy so I couldn't get truly everything I "wanted" (such as comp package or full leather).

Black on Black, executive package, drivers assistance, 343 style rims.

This will be my daily driver and I have never been to a track before, and don't know if I ever will be. But in east TN., we have tons of gorgeous curvy roads and mountain scenery.

I drove a ghibli SQ4 not too long ago. First thing I noticed was an extremely slow throttle response. Shifting into sport mode did nothing. Deal breaker for me.

The best thing about Maserati is its name, the marque just sounds super exotic. But "Ghibli"? Really? Yes, it means hot desert wind but who cares, it sounds pathetic.
