Carbon Fiber Hood
How likely is it that a Carbon Fiber Hood that matched the roof will become available as an after market option. if it were would you get it?
I think it would look OK but would need to see it in person to make up my mind. |

How probable? I would say it is a definate. When it will come out I can't tell you. But there are CF hoods available for the e46 M3.
Would I personally buy one? Probably not because of the pure expense of the thing. $3000+ for a carbon fiber hood isn't really worth that much to me when the current hood on the car isn't necessarily bland. I can easily see a CF hood on the M3 looking bad ass though. |

Yeah, but how much weight are we talking about saving? The exisitng hood is already made of aluminum.

Although CF hoods are normally offer weight savings I agree that the difference with aluminum may not warrant the expenses as any weight savings would be minimal.
I am more interested in the CF hood from an aesthetic point of view and whether or not it would complement the roof. I am most interested in seeing this with either AW or SSII |

With arrivals stateside expected in March, I can tell you that companies like Vorsteiner will have them available around the same time if not sooner...

negligible i'd think. maybe 2-4 pounds max with all the coats. but thats a total guess.
i don't think i'd go for it. i like the stock hood and i think it might look retarded/ricer with a CF hood. car would have to be SSII or AW to pull it off though. |

If it's only a 10lb saving in weight, then the 2-3 lbs. from paint isn't negligible.
Plus, this mod would mess up the 50/50 weight distribution! You'd have to buy the CF bootlid as well just to keep things proper. So this mod is definitely not worth it. |

...Except that 10 lb is one half of one percent of a difference in weight balance!

Isn't the 50/50 without the driver. Unless you weigh nothing you are going to mess up the weight just by sitting in the car. Since you (or at least a part of you will be in the front 50 of the car, the CF hood would actually help offset your weight and improve balance.
Bottom Line 10lbs more or less won't make a difference at all. |

I bet Vorsteiner will come up with a sick CF hood with more functional vents for the new M.

Anyways, 10 lbs might not matter I agree with you. But if your going to spend the extra 3-4 grand just for a CF hood that saves you a few pounds I'm sure you would want to get the most out of it as possible, 40 lbs vs 50 lbs is a 20% difference. And the lower the total pounds saved the bigger the % increase would be. |

Why would you quote f/r distribution with a driver involved? Doesn't seem like that would give an accurate assesment.

Don't know how much the paint weighs for just the hood. However, in the recent National Geographic tour of the BMW plant in Spartanburg, they said paint adds 20lbs to the whole car of a Z4.

. I think the best way to quote weight balance would be exactly the same way weight itself is quoted. Per a particular standard and and standard that includes a driver. Were you just being sarcastic?

I realize these are not representative of an e92 M3 but I just wanted to get the imagination going...
Here's a couple reference pics. Some choose not to paint or to use a blending of the cf with the body color, ie. just the powerdome cf blended to body color. I took this at Bimmerfest last year: This was from a local meet: Reference link to meet still looking for the "blended" pics...

the stock hood is aluminum. $$ per pound of weight savings will be rediculous. thats IF there is any savings.
only worth it if you want the look. I dont.
