£6k Weekend Toy

Where would your money be?

Does not need to be super fast, but needs to be fun and relatively simple so I can play about with it.

I have been thinking about a 2006/ 2007 MX5 2.0....

Try this one.

http://www.kewperformancecars.co.uk/...vertible-10104

Admittedly buying most cars at that price range comes with a health warning

Renaultsport Clio trophy 182. Best handling car I've ever owned, and I've had a few. Harry metcalfe of Evo fame also has one and can't speak highly enough of it. £6k will get you a really good one aswell mate!

Thanks

Would like a sports car though.

I know these are mustard, but I have never been a fan of Renaults...

The MK 3 mx5 is a bit heavy and not so much fun as the older ones.

How practical does it need to be? In this range you might be able to get a Westfield/caterham, vx220, Elise...

Honda S2000 are pretty bombproof.

986 Porsche boxsters are fun too

No probs mate, your first post didn't say what kind of car you were looking for you should drive one before you discount it!! I've always been a fan of fast renaults having had a 172, 182, 182 trophy and both a mk1 and mk2 Clio v6 in the past.

I wouldn't go as far to say an mk5 is a sports car though?? Honda S2000 would be a far better choice if that's what your looking for?

I made this exact move about 6 years back, wanted a toy, had to be 2+2, rwd and quick, preferably open top. I ended up in a porsche 944 turbo cabriolet. I still have it, love it and haven't spent too much on it. So that's my recommendation

I used to look at those regularly in the classifieds, but the idea of trying to pick a decent one now fills me with fear!

I imagined them to be like a bigger, quicker, more refined version of my old mx5!

Lots of beautiful looking alfas spoiled by being not only fwd but not as good handling as half the hot hatches around!

I've not spent a massive amount of time in an mx5 but I don't think your far off with that, the turbo boost is proper old school and requires a fair bit of respect though.
I think they're fairly safe engines with the right history, there are quite a few with big miles on and no major work and a good coupe is really starting to appreciate now.

I was actually looking at an old cup for a track car. Lack of a turbo puts me off a bit as getting any extra power out of the 2.0 n/a lump is going to be expensive. The other car I'm looking at is a megane 220. Cheap and turbocharged . It's no sports car tho APL
