My next car .........

I need to downsize really badly. My F30, though a fabulous drive, is too big for little old me. I also want a petrol engine.

It is now a toss-up between a fully loaded* 5 door Golf R + DSG and a fully loaded** BMW M135i + 8AT. I need 5 doors so that scrubs out the beautiful M235i, unless I get the deal of the decade.

I am really loving a white 5 door Golf R.

If I select the BMW, it will be another Superman. What else, eh?

Now all I have to do is arrange a back-to-back test drive.

* The whole hog
** Within reason

PS: The Aldi S3 Sportback is a frump and the Mercedes A45AMG has a horrid ride, yuck on the inside and is overpriced.

Not driven the S3 but drove an A45 for a bit. You're right though, a terrible ride.
Having said that I took out the old shape 'R' before deciding on my 3 series and the ride in that was even worse! The auto box was pants and completely sluggish/unresponsive. Don't get me started on the harsh ride...
Maybe the new R is better???

New Golf R is beautiful and a nice drive. My sister has bought the new one. The only thing she says is make sure you get the stereo upgrade because the standard one is worse than her old 60 plate Golf GTI!!

I really fancy the M235i but wouldn't consider the 135i - ugly. Otherwise the Golf R for me, 5 door looks great. Agree with your summary of the Audi and Merc. Is there a Volvo option these days?

Enjoy the deliberations...

Autocar:
In the streaming wet:
Golf R with DSG
0-60 mph in 4.8s
0-100 mph in 12.0s
Standing 1/4 mile in 13.4s at 105.2 mph
Standing km in 24.6s at 132mph

Even faster in the dry.
It will give a 335d xDrive a good headache when cornering as it is not a roll-y poll-y.

So it is fast enough for me.

If the M135i had a better snout, I would jump for it. As is, it is a bit meh.

No Volvo option yet or for sometime.

Still think the golf isn't as nice a product as the bmw, me and the missus love our cars, but when we go to vw we just can't get excited about their product range

Golf no question. The one series has a great engine but its so ugly, rides terribly and is much more cramped than the golf. Also facelift 1 Series is coming pretty soon. Build quality of a 1 Series is also nothing special.

The Mk7 Golf in white is a feast for the eyes. Really quite beautiful. Yes, it looks like it for me, but not just yet.

No way M135i all the way, assume the cars being equal - at the end of the day I'd rather a BM than a VW. People moan about the high 3 series sales but the golf is number 5 best seller edit - defo test drive them

However Evo really do rate the new R- I wouldn't say no, but maybe the 135 just reminds me of that special engine I had in my former e92 and have a soft spot 6 pot or 4 pot i'd take the 6

I really need to see that facelift before the decision is made. Yes, the ride is not that good either.

Those times are for the DSG and not the manual box.

Personally i prefer the Golf R over the M135i. I have driven both but just love the look and 4 wheel drive of the Golf R.

BMW 135i all the way - actually suits EBII (much better than the F30 IMO). The golf just won't have that ultimate driving feel you'll only get from a Bimmer

Yes, I know. Don't want a manual.

F30AM I can't see you getting a m135i, it has VSS.

I can see you downgrading to a Volkswagen. A 4WD Volkswagen. Well someone has to I guess.
