Any Negative Feedback after Coding

Hi Just thought I would ask the question before having it carried out via a fellow member at a later date.

Has anyone had any issues following coding.

Many thanks.

No problems with the coding here except every time my car has visited the dealers (about a dozen times now ) I have had a software update and lost the coding. I have given up for the time being

It is if they update the module you have coded.

Yes you will lose all coding. Good idea to keep a list of things you coded to easily reinstate them!

Can't you read and save the CAF files (plus I thought the program saved them anyway) so you don't need to re-key the changes.

Yes, the CAF files are saved in the CAF folder, plus should be backed up elsewhere and kept elsewhere (USB stick for me). Therefore, if you coding has been removed, simply 'activate' FA and then 'FDL code' the correct CAF file to the car. No need to change the parameters again within each file.

That sounds like a disaster waiting to happen if they've updated the software.

Are you sure it's safe to code old caf files to newer car software?!

I'm pretty sure it was not recommended on E90's, not sure if it's the same case on F series car, maybe @shawnsheridan knows?

No it's not. It's actually a good way to play Russian roulette with bricking your car. You might get away with it depending on what got updated, but for the few minutes it takes I'd just recode it. If you make notes of what you've changed then it's a doddle.

Do the dealers make any comments ie do they get any messages from the OBD to say coding has been done? Not that it should matter but I am sure it would be 'invalidates your warranty Sir' type of nonsense.

It is possible that they could find you've coded it by going through every parameter in every module in the car and cross reference them to the original settings. But in reality, no it would never happen. And it doesn't invalidate your warranty anyway.

Good points so probably not worth the risk. I hadn't thought that it might mismatch against new software.

What does the software update do that we download via the BMW site and load via the USB port? I assume it just tinkers with the idrive (linking to new mobiles etc.) but won't affect coding issues?

I've never 'lost' my changes even though the car has been in a few times now. At the last service I expected it but I guess they didn't update the software in my car.

No negative impact for me and some of the coding changes make the car much better to live with.

I also have had no negative feedback from the dealer nor, AFAIK anyway, have any of the cars I coded.

The loss of coding is dependent on what modules the dealer updates. Sometimes you will lose coding changes other times you won't.

As it only take around half an hour to recode everything I don't think it's a big deal!
