Musty smell in cabin

I've started to notice a musty smell in the cabin, usually first thing in morning. Have cleaned interior (and checked my BO!)and can't see any obvious water ingress.

Has anyone noticed anything similar? It's a pain as no more new car smell!

An obvious question, how are you using the climate control and A/C function?

Usually the musty smell is down to damp. Check for leaks in the rubber seals etc. Usually the flooring will be damp.

There are 2 rubber grommets that need to be removed as a recall, mine had similar issues.

Dealer removed these items, touch wood all OK now

Any idea where these grommets are located? Are they on the base of the doors?

Are you sure this isn't coming from the aircon? I used to get a musty smell in my E46, which was really unpleasant at times. It's due to algae or bacteria (can't remember exactly) growing in the damp parts of the aircon, and the simple fix is to run the aircon at max temperature for about 20 minutes, and then immediately switch to min temp for the same amount of time. This kills off the nasties - I can confirm it worked for me every time for several months, although it did tend to come back eventually.

The smell is there when I get in the car. Wouldn't the air on issue only happen when the engine was turned on?

Garage List
You need to always leave the AC button on and even in winter you need to make the AC work by bringing the temp to 16degrees which is the minimum this will circulate out any of the bacteria or algae formed in the tracts and then with a full blast in the max temp as well.

Phone your dealer. Even if you aren't due a service or anything, book it in to be done. Only takes them a few minutes

+1 dealer. Free easy job. But I am surprised how misty the windows get with auto CC sometimes. Perhaps misty eventually becomes musty...

Every BMW dealer I've used has at least washed the car. Although, Rybrook at Worcester have introduced a £5 charge for a very mini-valet - basically a quick vac on top of the quick jet wash.
