Mer: what's not good about it??

So I dug out an old bottle of Mer today and covered the whole car in it.

I've been suffering from water spots recently (as I'm sure most people have who've been silly enough to wash their car in direct sunlight) and Mer gets rid of every one of them. It's easy on, and truly easy off. It's seems to give a bit of a shine too.

So my question is, what's not good about it?

I really don't fully understand waxes and polishes the way I should, but given that it makes my car shine, is dead easy to use and it's not that expensive, should I use it more or less often??

Thoughts please people...

Your paint's probably going to flake off by next week..

Nah, I don't know. I would hazard a guess at pr and marketing.

If I remember correctly they used to advertise on TV, the guy cleaned his caravan with it? Used to be the blue tub? Not a good brand image nowadays.

Quick google looks like they've rebranded..

I guess it's ok, but just lots more companies and products out there, constantly coming up with new and better products. Apparently. So there will just be better stuff out there to use.

Ultimately the product is only any good if it actually gets used, so if you're happy with it then the more often you use it the better I'd say.

I had a bottle off my uncle years back. He used it on his fibreglass boat hull. I used it as a mild cutting polish to remove minor scratches but never on a whole car. I think it would be a bit harsh on modern paint for regular use these days IMO.

Not much wrong with it, just these days much more choice in market.

Also once upon a time all anyone used was polish (abrasive stuff) now a days more and more are using waxes, sealants (non abrasive).

These days I only use a very mild polish and hen not that much.

I add a cap of it to the water if I'm just doing a wash and rinse, seems to help the water bead off.

Gosh I remember when Mer was the crème de la crème of automotive cleaning products. Not much out there to beat it. I agree with Deyvy: PR & Marketing is responsible for the plethora of products all of which do nigh on the same.

I class it alongside shampoos and ladies' face creams. They all do a similar job in practice.

The whole detailing thing is great if you enjoy it (and I do) but if your car is a daily driver then it's hard to spend a lot of time and money on a lovely sunny Sunday only to have it back to "average looking" by 9am Monday.

I'm going to have mine polished and nano-treated as I believe it'll help the dirt that does stick (and there should be less of it) come off more easily with a snow foam and jetwash. But I wonder if it'll be that different in reality.

Mer is good stuff I recall, and your experience bears that out. Just do it!

It's not made from the tears of unicorns, lovingly collected by the finest maidens on their last sojourn before being sacrificed to a dragon, so therefore it's no good

(More seriously, it's a good system, and it seems to have had a relaunch with a lot of marketing added, and it's available in your local Halfords. It'll do the job)

A Tanzanite Tourer - a first on here!

I've had no probs, although it does show up streaks and droplets after cleaning. I've acquired some swirls and one or two scratches but it's a motorway muncher not a Faberge egg so I can live with it.

You clean it like you would any car and there's a local hand car wash near me that (after holding off for two months cos it was so new) I now turn to.

Once home I get the Autoglym polish out and finish it off.

You'll love it - it's an amazing colour, truly.

On a similar tip, has anyone ever used the stuff that's 'endorsed' by TV's Tiff Needell on late night infomercials? Any good? Supposed to forma protective film which means dirt is washed off: whether it be rain or hose. Too good to be true?

Thanks for your thoughts everyone. So I think I'll carry on using it every so often, in between the odd wax coat.

Re that stuff of Tiff's, I'm really not convinced about waterless washes, plus the amount you'd need to use to clean the whole car with any kind of comfort that there's enough lubricant to prevent scratching, well I can't see it being value for money really.
