Depreciation VS. F10 M5

The F10 M5 has taken a hammering in resale value. Do future M3/M4 owners have the same to look forward to?

Under 5k Mile 2013s are 80k. Over 20k in a year depreciation. With tax you're looking at a 30k hit. Wowzer.

You gotta pay to play rings a bell. I think buying one of these cars it is understood how much the resale drops, this goes for all luxury goods as a lot of the appeal in luxury goods is when they are new.

No idea if the M3 will depreciate as much but I made that exact same comparison... and went with a 2013 M5 fully loaded (no carbon brakes) w/ 6k miles for $80k. I was on the F80 M3 waiting list for 1.5 years and went to test drive the M5 and couldn't turn it down. ALOT of car for $80k

It should be less in dollars since comparable depreciation rate is generally more a percentage of the price paid. It's to early to say at what rate it will fall. Demand, reviews, reliability, quality, economy will all play a part. M5s are notorious for depreciation though while M3s has hold value better. But at this time it's a gamble.

Not likely. The e60 m5 experienced a much steeper depreciation curve than the m3, and I expect this gen to be the same.

I think M3's generally hold their value much better than M5's. Look at what a 2008-2010 M3 costs to buy now compared to a 2008-2010 M5. They aren't that much cheaper, if any.

Undoubtedly, the M3/M4 will hold it's value MUCH better than an M5. The M5 tanks in price. But not like the M6. I've seen local dealers with maybe 4-5 M6's on the lot. They can't give em away.

I think many factors are involved. The target audience, brand equity, image, desirability, size/weight of car, type of car, etc. etc.

No different than 911 Turbo vs GT3. Turbos (not counting classics) depreciate like crazy, while GT3's don't. Heck, the 997 GT3 RS' are going for crazy money.

Agreed with what someone said. A used M5 is a lot of car for the money

20% depreciation is pretty standard first year depreciation, maybe a tad on the high end but not exactly surprising. You are also comparing MSRP to used pricing.

An m3 will hold it's value better as the years pass, but if you buy a $70k MSRP m3 in 2014 I'd expect you to get one one year later for $56-$60k.

If you have a 2014 98k M5 you can buy it new for 85k...I don't see the value in buying a used one for 80k...So the reality is it depreciated 5k, bc thats the current market

I see it no different than any other previous M3.

Look at lease residuals, if you want to see what BMW thinks they will be worth after 3 years.

Really? Tell that to the GT-R and 911 guys. I had my GT-R for 2 years and sold it for $2000 less than what I bought it for.

Yeap. I think it has to do with maintenance/insurance cost being more expensive on the m5/m6 also the 2014 m5 with competition package got very good reviews while magazines weren't impressed with the MY2013
