AWD Staggered Wheel issues
Update - Well I fixed that first issue but now lately have found a new problem that was so bad I had to take the setup off and go back to stock.
On acceleration the car actually would cut out (felt like multiple misfires) and a driveline vibration shifting up into 2nd 3rd and 4th. The 'misfire' feeling I actually thought was related to the cars older coilpacks and conjunction with the newly installed Cobb AP. Swapping back to the OEM 17's the car has zero problems with either... really crazy I didnt ruin something. Wheels again are 19x8.5F & 19x9.5R Tires are 265/30/19 & 235/35/19 Overall diameter 647mm F & 643mm R According to the manufacturers website the wheel sizes I have stated are recommended for the wheel size so I dont think the tires are stretched or inflated beyond those specs. I need to measure them when I get home. Last edited by ///M5Driver; 04-01-2014 at 11:08 AM.. |

Have you actually checked the fluid level in the diff? I had a similar issue on my Infiniti FX AWD after replacing diff fluid. For a few days after new fluid, it had a weird whine. It went away on it's own, I just assumed the new fluid had to cycle through or something. Incorrect sized tires would damage the transfer case, not the diff.

Well just a quick update, I jacked the car up and realized I dont have a 14mm hex socket for the diff. On a positive note though I noticed the driveshaft/pinion had the heat shield somewhat smashed up into it and had actually worn down the gear/sprocket on the drive shaft (shiny metal so I'd think that would mean it happened fairly recently).
Either way I drove it tonight and didn't get any noise... I'll know for sure in the morning when I drive it to work! |

Nothing wrong with those wheel and tire sizes. Pretty much the same thing I run. Have you tried re balancing the rear tires? It is also possible that the tires are just bad from the factory.

A friend of mine just got new rear tires on his e46 and had horrible resonance and vibration at all speeds. I brought my winter setup and swapped them on his car and all the problems went away. He ended up getting another set of rear tires and his car is as good as new. Sometimes the tires are crappy from the factory.

It sounds to me like your car will not work with this tire setup. The rule of thumb is to have less than 1% difference between the front and the rear (as I'm sure you already know this). Since your setup is 0.85%, it must be too much for your car. Yes it works for other cars, but the mechanical tolerances on your car makes it too much. If you can fit 275's on the rear without rubbing, this should fix your problem. You could go with 225's on the front, but the 275's on the rear would look better.

Sad part is I wanted 275's in the first place but I saw most staggered setups used 265's lol. |
