Looks like LSD is going to cost around $3k MSRP for the US. The earlier post by Estoril_F22 (sorry don't know how to tag) shows $3,615 and appears to be Canadian pricing.
EDIT: $3,615 is the price including installation, which we all have to pay! unbelievable... My question... Is it worth it? Especially if I live in an area that gets plenty of snow in the winter? I've had no experience with LSD and wondering how it works in snow. So far I've been reading mixed reviews about it both helping and hurting. What do you guys think? Get it, or Pass? |

I think the price depends on what type of LSD it is.
I have seen some LSD go for 500 on cars, and others for 3k..

If it does cost that much it will probably be a fail. Unless you are a track addict the X drive option will cost about the same an will perform much better in snowy region.

If I were ordering M235i, I would want that LSD but $3k+ is a big jagged pill to swallow when the car is already over $50k after options.

3k is steep. I can't justify it because I don't intend to track the car.
Would rather put that money towards an exhaust and a set of 19s.

$3.6k is way too much. I've driven a 135i in snow with winter tires and the open diff and it's just fine. Any improvements brought in by the LSD are not worth $3,600 to me.

I'm definitely interested in the diff but to start as a mod up front it's a bit much. I think it depends on how far you end up going with the car --- exhaust, tune etc. Then things like a diff might be worth it for that added performance.

LSD is mainly for powering out of corners or being a hooligan. When coming out of a corner, the inside wheel that is spinning on an open diff will not be adding power to the wheel with grip. If you have a manual, you can do some great donuts or smooth powerslides on low speed corners. Otherwise on the street no real difference.
If you start adding up the cost of all the spoilers, trim, wheels and LSD your looking at close to 12K on a car that is already $51K well equipped. F$%K that just get an M3-4

I would not own a daily driven RWD car here in Seattle without a LSD, but that's just me. I don't have any real justification except that with the amount of rain and some snow we see, I want all the traction I can get at all times.

LSD is a big advantage in snow (turns the car from a 1-wheel drive car - and it's the wheel with the least traction into a 2-wheel drive car)

There are some great rwd cars without LSD. Nissan 240SX as a road car (not a drifter)
Some smarter better drivers, then I'll ever dream to be, think w/o LSD it adds a touch of stability to fast broad turns. |

At ~$3k my advice to most of you: "Don't waste your money." If it was $1-2k I might say why not.
I see no point in a LSD on a street driven modern car equipped with DSC etc. The electronic nannies will kick in as soon as you have wheel slip. In low traction situations like snow you are better off leaving all that stuff on as it'll do a better job as a whole than just a mechanical LSD. Even for a track driven car with the DSC etc turned off it would be rare to have wheel spin on anything but the tightest turns driven at 10/10ths. With some stiff springs and a stiff roll bar the LSD would help you put power down during autocross or if burnouts and drifting are you thing then the LSD will obviously help. My background: ~2500lb track e30 with ~280 HP on 205 series tires with LSD Tracked 2001 330 open diff 4 years in Rochester, NY snow belt and 10 east coast years.
