PROceed and DME Program Recall FYI...

I have a great BMW dealership, so I can say that leaving the PROceed in the car during the recent recall is possible. No problems, no headaches, no concerns whatsoever. The dealership picked up my car, did the recall, put on my snow wheels/tires, and returned it to me cleaned the next day. (I get valet service, so it always adds a day.)

The PROceed is pretty easy to remove, from what I understand, but its even better if you don't have to ever open the hood!

Oh yeah, I asked them to top off the oil and the windshield wiper fluid. Guess which wasn't topped? The windshield wiper fluid. Strange. I guess I could drop by one of these days to have them fill it, but I would save money buying a gallon of window wash than I would by driving out to the dealership.

No, I read no discussion on the technical feasibility of updating the DME with the PROceed installed. I asked on the Vishnu forums before bringing in the car, but I received no reply. I merely mentioned my cool dealership to forestall any ignorant warranty talk.

In case others were wondering about the technical requirements of the recall, I thought that the information would be handy.

Isn't the DME updated using the interface by the ODBII? What does that have to do with Procede's location?

I don't know how it's updated. The recall said it takes a fair amount of time. So, I assumed it was more involved. If it could have been done through the OBD-II port, then I don't know why they would want the car for so long. Didn't matter to me, since I was getting my winter wheels installed and the valet service always adds time to every service.

Yes it's through the OBD2 port and the engine hood does not have to be open unless the technician hooks up a battery charger. But he won't really look at vacuum lines unless he's curious.

Why ask Vishnu about a service visit? Also, is your dealer "cool" because you know they know about your mod, or are they cool because you simply didn't hear anything from them about it?

I don't think there's ever been any issue with dealer mentioning a piggyback when a vehicle is in for routine/scheduled service. If the car was in service because a system or part failed and the piggyback was left in, there might be a different outcome... I believe Eugen has the most extensive experience/discussions with his dealer and what they can see/record about a piggyback mod.

The recall is a software update that was done through the OBDII port (and the Most bus jumper BTW). The technician for sure opened the hood to put a battery charger on because the programming station will not allow programming unless battery voltage is above 13.2 volts.

It took so long because depending on what software was in the car before the update, most of the control modules on the car were updated. This can take 3-4 hours of strictly programming time. Then there's some work to be done after programming to get everything reset back the way it was before the software was put in.

Thanx for the additional information, turbotko.

I contacted Vishnu forums, since I didn't know exactly was required to update the DME and this forum tends to start a drama. I didn't know if I needed to remove the PROceed for technical reasons. I only mentioned my dealership being cool to prevent the warranty police from crying.

I even wrote FYI just so there wouldn't be a need to write a huge thread. I thought I was being helpful.
