blown turbo, seeking advice

As stated above, I'm assuming the turbo on my 320D has given up the ghost.

the car has covered 96,000 miles.
been driving it around today, few runs to the local tip clearing my garage out, then earlier i went to the cash point, turned the car off.
when i got back in the car, turned it on and pulled away, it was totally flat !
NO BOOST ! [/B]

theres no oil leaking from anywhere, and theres no white smoke coming from the exhaust.

the good news.... my girlfriends dad used to be a BMW mechanic for BMW and now has his own garage restoring classics and building hot rods. on inspection he seems to think it could be the turbo actuator as it is boosting slightly then losing pressure.

There isn't any warning lights on the dash.

the car is now parked in his garage on the ramp for him to have a closer look. I'll be doing the work but i'll have free rain over all his equipment which should make the job easier.

now for the advice!
if it is a turbo I need, is there anyway of uprating it ? for example, could i fit the turbo from a 325D ? does it take much modification to fit and run? or should i just play it safe and replace with a new 320D turbo ?

Regards, Marc

More importantly, what is a local tip, and cash point?

I assuming you're not from the U.S. Which means I have no idea what the answer to your question is. Most people here drive gasoline cars so I don't know much about BMW's diesels. Sorry:/

Here's my common sense though I assume it would fit considering the turbo size differences aren't immense.

I'd have thought that was obvious:

A tip: somewhere where you tip stuff. Normally crap, dead bodies, etc

A cash point: a point where you get cash.

Do you have to explain everything to people these days?

Several things spring to mind, actuator being one of the things

MAF sensor

Boost leak: If the turbo is trying to get boost and it's leaking from somewhere, you'll get a differential between asked for boost and actual boost. If this is the case, I'm surprised that the car isn't showing the engine management light

A pipe may have blown off somewhere also.

Just my twopenneth.

Probably a blown charge pipe. That's happened to me twice.

Rarely or ever do you get a blown turbo without accompanying noise. I've blown a few and while I didn't get any smoke etc the turbo bearing makes one hell of a noise when its blown.

had a phone call with my girlfriends dad last night who was having a look at the car, he took a few pipes off to check them over, put the ar back together and now it's fine !

pulls like a train he said. so I'm happy that it isn't the turbo. what he did suggest though, was to replace the Vac pipes as the car has covered 96,000 they will be getting tired and probably start to perish.
So I'll replace them and see how I get on.

Having had a few Golf GTDs, I heard many anecdotes about local roadside repair companies (RAC, AA, etc) who carry zip ties with them JUST for the Golf Blown Hose issue :-)

Could you explain what "free rain over his equipment" means?

Commonly mistaken, like good riddens, but one would not expect folks from the UK to botch the English language...

Any chance a vacuum hose is loose? It's worth a quick look.

They're only borrowing it anyway.
