150K Miles: Rebuild or Buy a New Engine?
My 2006 330i just turned 150K miles. I like that car and it is basically worth nothing as a trade in, so Im going to keep it. At the 100K mile mark it started having issues with oil leaks and stuff.
I would like to refit the car to brand new with engine and transmission. I was looking at getting used engines, but then I am just going to have to go through those 100K mile issues again. Would you rebuild or buy a new engine? What cost range am I looking at for each option? Thanks |

Why would you do a complete rebuild to fix an oil leak? You should be good on current internals, just need to replace some of the aging gaskets and plastic pieces.
Have you replaced your valve cover gasket and oil filter housing gasket? If not, good chance that one or both of those are your oil leak. |

Is your current engine having oil burning issue? Low compression? Blow-by? Have you done a leak down test?
How do you know you NEED to replace your current engine? |

My wife is starting to get frustrated at all the repairs the engine needs. I want to do some upgrades to the body and suspension, but not till the oil leaks and things are fixed. It seems like everytime I get it fixed, something else breaks. Right now, my front airbag light stays on, my Tire warning light stays on and no one can reset them.
If I spend money on the car before all the other issues are fixed she is gonna flip. I would just rather replace it and be done, just want to know the costs. |

In all seriousness, give us a detailed list of all the issues your car currently has so we can answer your question. I seriously doubt you need an engine overhaul/replacement.

Unless you have serious, serious, SERIOUS issues with a BMW NA I6, there should never be a reason to replace it. Oil leaks - just fix it. If you had bent rods, bad compression tests, etc... then you'd be talking about some serious stuff. But otherwise I'd just say maintain it. Issues at 150k... that's like a mid-life crisis for this engine! It'll go much longer.

You may spend more than the car is worth trying to replace an entire engine and transmission BTW. If you think the car is becoming a money pit, why not just sell it and buy something new/newer?

I like the car. If I got a new one it would be the new Merc CLA250. Id rather keep the BMW.

But you do need to know where the threshold is, too... at what point do you stop throwing good money after bad. With only 150k on the clock, the car SHOULD have plenty of life left in it. But think like an insurance company here... if your repair costs start to represent a sizable chunk of the car's total value, it's best to move on. I doubt that would be the case with an engine oil leak. Not sure what's up with your TPMS.

I've had multiple NA I6 BMWs. never had an engine that needed replacing.
For that matter I've also had other BMWs with I4s and only one needed replacement because the front seal let go and the idit light never came on. Well you can guess the rest. |

Rebuilding your engine for an oil leak is like burning down your house because a lightbulb is out.
Fix the leak and your engine will be good for a long long time with proper maintenance. |

My 06 330i is at 120xxx. Running strong. If she develops a leak I will just replace the gasket (probably will be the valve gasket). BMW I6's are strong, I mean they have built them for almost forever.
Replacing the gasket itself is going to be not bad, I did the shim job on my e46 M3 and had to replace the gaskets (entire process only took 1 night really) |
