M4 or used 911 turbo ?
So I sold my 2010 m3 .. And I'm now debating between the upcoming m4 Or a used 2007 911 turbo.
2 questions What would you do ? For those that maybe had 911 turbo are the maintenance cost outrageous! I have read that their ceramic brakes are like 10k to replace. |

I like the awd drive and whp on that car. I have drive it a few times and it's a great car with power. Can't compare power wise at this point but interior looks not to bad. The 2014 looks amazing thou

I have been on the exact same boat.....
Since I sold my M3 I have been shopping for a 997 TT. First off, finding the car with colors and options is almost impossible, then once you find what you are looking for it is beat up trashed and etc. My research led me to be wanting a 2009 6m with diff lock, sport chorono, adaptive seats. I don't want a black or a conv car......bottom line, very few available. Then there is the idea of buying a 5 year old used car with some dated technology.....especially if you buy a 2007 with old electronics. My conclusion is to spend my $$$ on something brand new where it is build to my spec. Hope this helps.

Jopa - I wouldn't sweat the maintenance. I would not buy a car with ceramic brakes and then you'll be in the clear.
I too have strongly considered the "997.1" (2007-2009) Turbos but ultimately decided that spending $65k+ on a car so old just isn't practical especially considering a GT-R is in the same price range and is a much quicker car. The 997.2 (2010+) 911 Turbos are supposedly much more livable as a daily driver but are just so much more expensive yet still slower than the GT-R. My heart wants a 911 Turbo but my brain just prevents me from getting one. I am going to wait a few years to see if the prices of the 997.2 Turbos fall now that the 991 Turbos are out and then revisit the question at that time. Honestly at this point if i really wanted into a 911 Turbo I'd find a 996 Turbo for dirt cheap as it is 90% of the same car as the 997.1 despite the variance in appearances. Of course most people can't tolerate the looks of the 996 but it is the best Porsche value bar none. You can find low mileage examples in the lower $40k range. i have never been one to buy used/old high end German cars that had expired warranties.
but i think Porsche is among the best if you go that route. seem to be very reliable cars. i think 911s age insanely well. 10 year old 911 still look like the business |

Depends a lot on what you like and how you're going to use the car. I have shopped for a 997 Turbo a few times, but with being in the northeast where the summer is short and the roads are crap, I couldn't live with a 997 Turbo as a daily and if it's a weekend car, there are other cars in the price range that I find a bit more enjoyable because they weren't trying to be as flexible as a 997 Turbo.

Also keep in mind transmission. A 2-pedal M4 will at least have DCT, whereas a 2-pedal 997.1 TT has a Mercedes torque converter. It's a decent automatic, but still. 997 Turbo didn't go PDK until 997.2 and MY2010.
If you're looking for 3 pedals, I think 997.1 turbo is a reliable way to go fast. Problem areas are well documented and fixes aren't terribly costly. Maintenance is oil and brakes, provided the previous owners and you drive like sane people. I wouldn't sweat PCCB, as iron rotor retrofits are widely available. Whether you're ok with owning a used car with potentially unknown service history and no factory warranty is a question only you can decide. |

Couple things
The 997.2 didn't happen until 2010. The 2009 had the upgraded suspension calibration and nav, but not the full interior refresh and DI engine. Two, I had a 2007. It's a great car but the build quality in the interior isn't great, the handling is tricky stock, it's old, the tech is super dated etc. It's also extrnely powerful and reliable and has great brakes. I expect the m3 to be almost as fast as the 997.1 tt and handle better. It also weighs less than the tt. Hopefully the new brakes are up to the task this time. I would easily take the new m3. |

Another thought I had was to buy the turbo for a year or so and then when the m4 is an year old buy a 1 year old one that way I'm not hit with depreciation. Thanx for everybody's opinion |

You can always go cpo for piece of mind. I too thought about an 09 Turbo but ultimately crossed it off my list. I was just digging around looking at gtr's and realized Nissan does not certify them which to me means mileage/age = trouble!

I don't have the tolerance, patience , and risk taking mentality to buy a car with an expired warranty so the M4 is the easy choice for me. This was tested recently with the opportunity to buy a 10 year old Ferrari with 95k miles. I took one serious look at cost of parts and maintenance schedule and ran for the Bavarian Hills to pre-order the F-82.

Buddy of mine bought an 08 (07?) 911 turbo w 8k miles 2 mos ago. Minor mods thus far (exhaust, drop, wheels). Getting tune next. Should push out close 600 hp when complete. he loves it....head turner for sure. Yup...rotor pads cost an arm and a leg but I thought they never wear??? 997 Turbos are reliable motors, as are the cars. You might have a power steering leak or other small issue but the car just works. With the wide rear, wing and turbo badge the car has presence and everyone knows it, they have classic looks a GTR will never have. A 7 year 911 is indistinguishable from a fresh 991 to 99.9% of the population.
PCCB will last forever on the street, just don't track them unless your okay with replacement cost. I'd have no concerns buying and daily driving a PCCB car, great stopping power, low dust, look cool. It's not hard to find slightly used rotors for around $6K for all four corners, many buyers pull them off, cash in or hold for resale. You can't really compare Porsche to Ferrari ownership if you want to actually drive them, Porsche with 10K miles is just getting broken in, 430 with 10K is high mileage and done for most Ferrari buyers. Depends on what your after. I've owned many BMW and Porsches and both (knock on wood) have been very reliable. I have an unmolested 997.1 TT and recently picked up a '11 C4S. My wife has an '11 M3 vert. Before the '11 C4S, I had a '08 Targa 4S w/10k miles - never had a single issue with car.
I never get tired of the styling of the 911 or driving it (feels extremely connected to the road). The 997.1TT motor is more durable/stronger than the 997.2TT motor. If its a late model 911 with warranty and/or with CPO, you'll be fine. I'm sure the M4 will be nice but both of my 911's IMO are just a little more special than any of the BMWs we've own past/present. Last edited by YellowMellow; 12-26-2013 at 11:36 PM.. |

Oops.. My bud has a 2008 (07?) 911 turbo....not 1998. Typo. That ass is wide and sexy. he is thinking about getting a personalized plate...but the folks in the 911 T club highly advise that he does not due to increased chances of envy and hatertude (lol) . * keyed Porsche. I have driven it and it is blast. stAnds out for sure Last edited by tacoman; 12-27-2013 at 06:36 AM.. |

I was considering 911 tt,but after the reveal of m4, I decided to wait a little bit and see how it goes, cause m4 seems to be as fast as 911,probably a bit slower. +newer car, cheaper maintence.
