Is the rear diffuser functional or just for looks?

I found this article at C&D, and it made me wonder about the rear diffuser on the M235i.

Your answer is in the article itself.
A functioning diffuser requires a flat bottom. Most if not all production cars diffusers are for show with the exception of few million dollar exotics

Interesting read thanks for sharing. Unless the car has a flat underbody a diffuser will not have effects. that said they should put diffusers on the Tesla model S not that the car is slow or anything

I guess "flat" means truly flat, then. I was thinking the undersides of cars are flat in that they're on the same plane, but they're not smooth flat, I guess.

Take a look under the body of a newer BMW and you will see tons of panels and whatnot making the underside of the car as flat and as smooth as possible. Is it like an F1 car? No.

There's some benefit to be gained, but probably only at racetrack speeds on smooth roads.
