all depends on a car. you might get kbb "trade-in" if you purchase already overpriced car. i usually go by NADA.com trade-in as my purchase price. < have purchased all my cars like that

All the dealers seem to hate KBB and it seems to be way off some times.
Second for NADA.com - they seem better more up to date on the current market.

The last 2 times I traded in cars, I mentioned the KBB price but was offered significantly less. Both times the dealer told me that they never pay KBB prices. FWIW.

I have sold 3 cars in the past couple of years. Seems that Edmunds.com private party was the closest to what I actually got for my car. Also, we all think our cars are in excellent condition, but in reality, whatever condition you think your car is in, drop it by 1.

KBB and Edmunds is one of the top trusted site and it's what I use.

kbb is not accurate, but it gives u a rough idea of how much a car is valued depending on condition and options. I used to work with tons of auto loans, and NADA is used by a lot of lenders.

NADA is used by lenders and insurance companies, in actuality, market value is market value. There is no real book for it. Galves' auction guide used to be pretty good, but a lot don't like that either.

if you are buying/selling from/to private seller they are very accurate and fair.
If you are buying/selling from/to a dealer never expects them to give you that price.

I personally don't understand Edmunds pricing.
KBB and nada will say one thing and Edmunds will usually come in at 25%-33% less then those two almost as if you're comparing a clean title to a salvaged one. When I sell a car and someone brings up edmunds pricing I laugh. |

They are not using Nada or Kbb. They are referring to the auctions and what your vehicle will bring there. I recently traded my x5. Went by what Kbb and got nothing close to what Kbb said it was worth.

Lol ok.
Soo nada and kbb says my car is 24.5k-25.5k private party and Edmunds says it 15.5k private party. If someone offered me 15.5k I'd ask them if they were smoking rocks. Where were all the Edmund priced 335's and C5Z's when I was looking for them, for two years mind you? There must be some secret code word that makes a seller go from nada/kbb pricing to Edmunds pricing? Last edited by Miller335; 11-08-2013 at 08:48 AM.. |

P.S.- Just looked on Autotrader.com, and we do have a lot of 2007 E92's 335s in the $17k-$18k range from dealers. This equals about $15.5k to $16.5k from a private seller. Last edited by Roberto Cervezas; 11-08-2013 at 09:00 AM.. |

That spread was the norm for the last few years I've look at both C5Z's and 335's. If I went off of edmunds pricing I could get a M3 for the price that I bought my 335 for.

NADA is always a little high but much more accurate than KBB for a private sale. When you get a loan they use NADA. Edmunds sounds like a dealer trade in offer, they have to make money selling that thing after all.

Dealer trade in's are priced at current wholesale auction prices, if they plan to keep the car and sell it themselves you might get a few more dollars.

So I just went through this same excercise and based on my experience, NADA/KBB are high and Edmunds is pretty close to what I could get on trade in.
You can always get lucky and find a dealer who has a buyer lined up to buy it. But in reality, as someone pointed out to me, why would the dealer pay more for your car than the same/similar car they can get wholesale/auction. And as many will point out, you can always make more selling your car yourself which is what I've done in the past but I must admit there is some benefit to a completely hassle free transaction. |
