Modifying a car that has CPO
I held off on modifying my leased car because well, it was leased. Now that I've purchased it and CPO'd, I'm thinking of doing more mods, like suspension and visible engine mods (intake/downpipe)
Will BMW (service) look at modifications on a CPO with the same scrutiny as a leased vehicle? What's your opinion? |

Basic suspension mods shouldn't cause an issue but going to the dealer with visible engine mods, especially downpipes, will be risking your CPO coverage. Best thing is to go back to stock (engine) for dealer visits. I know people with CPO coverage that get downpipes but have them taken out for major warranty claims.

Go for it.. The only way they can deny any repair if there is proof that your modification is what cause a warranty claim. So if in doubt before taking it for repair, swap it back to stock..

It depends on the dealership some of them are really laid back. But as the post above says, go for it if you are in doubt that they might blame a malfunction on the dp, get it removed before your visit.

Thanks for the replies guys. I'm not set on getting a downpipe because of emissions mostly. Maybe I'll hold off and just do an intake and suspension.

I'm under CPO on the modified BMW until 2015
At a certain point even the most relaxed SA and techs have to draw a line. So I just said "oh well" and pay for repairs and upkeep myself. An intake and coils shouldn't be too much of an issue.

The CPO warranty for the most part seems to cover powertrain. I'd say you can modify the suspension without any worries. As others have alluded to, modifying the engine does get you in to a bit of a grey area.

I've never had any suspension work, but I took my last car in with a dci, blow off valve, muffler delete and no one said anything. My current car also has visible mods and no one cares.
It might depend on the dealer, though.
