What would you do?
So, I drive about 1000 miles/week for work. My 2007 335i has 212K miles on her at this point and is having some issues so she's on her last leg. So it is time to get something new.
This time around, I'm probably going to get something that I don't mind beating up a little bit more and don't mind putting on all the miles. Because I'm making a sacrifice to get more of a beater as a DD, I'm also going to get a second automobile that I can take care of and enjoy. With all that said, what would you guys get?? I've always wanted a Range Rover so that is an option. But then again, we'll probably start having kids in about 3 years so I feel like I should get something fun and fast, but it still needs to be fairly practical. I'm definitely considering leasing so in 3 years I can change as my priorities change. Maximum I'm really looking at is in the 80K range. So, what would you get? |

First, I'd recommend against the RR. They're cool looking, but not the most durable vehicles in the world. With that many miles, it's going to cost you an arm and a leg. How about this: you buy a very practical, efficient commuter car that'll rack up the miles, won't break, and be fuel efficient. Then get a second car that's really fun as a weekend warrior. Here are some ideas, using the price of a new RR as the total budget:
Commuter car: 2012 328i with 25,000 miles; 34 mpg; ~$32,000 Fun car: 2007 997 Turbo, 30,000 miles, 450 HP, ~$70,000 or some variation of the above. |

Sorry I wasn't more clear. I am getting a daily commuter that is going to basically be a beater that I won't feel bad about putting so many miles on. I was asking what everyone's opinion is for the "weekend warrior" car as you put it. That would be the RR or some type of sports car. Thanks for the input.

DD: Honda Accord
Weekend Warrior: Audi Q7 Prestige (supercharged V6). My brother bought one and it's all sorts of fun and looks killer. |

I think my next 3 series will be a diesel. I love my 335 for power, but it's awful on fuel, and rarely do I ever get to use the power. The new diesels are still quick, but the mileage is insane.
That being said it'll be a few years away yet. |

you basically repeated his question and ignored everything else. -he said he is buying a beater and new car. -he said he definitely wants to LEASE the new car. -he said he wants something fast and practical, how the eff is a 911 practical. -RR would work because he is leasing and not putting the mikes on it. go back and READ the post.. |

I am not even going to recommend anything for the beater but for your weekend warrior, get a two door sports coupe. I would recommend a GTR or an M3. Once kids start strolling around u can do the range rover. I would like to note that leasing is not the best option for you since you put a lot of miles ever week on your car (that is if you use it as your commuter).

Haha I was waiting for this as well. I got her at 31K miles. I'm in medical sales so I travel like crazy for work. Unfortunately, fixing her is a no-go. The turbos are blown and would be about $7-8K to replace, plus there are several other major issues, so it's time to move on. Ready for something else anyway. I'm looking at Range Rover, M3, M4, C63, or some type of Porsche. If I purchase vs lease, it will be need to be about 2 years old (2012ish). I'm even looking at a 2013 S4 to save a little money. |
