BMW NA Launch Event: 2014 X5 sDrive35i xLine and M50d Pose With E70

While on the X5 press launch drive, we had an opportunity to see the F15 X5 next to its predecessor - the E70 X5. Pictured here is an xLine X5 sDrive35i in Sparkling Brown, a M50d and a E70 X5 M Sport.

The X5 sDrive35i will be the first RWD X5. It features the 3.0L 6 cylinder turbo inline N55 engine, rated at 300hp / 300 lb-ft, 0-62 MPH in 6.2 sec. See full specs in the X5 Official Thread. This one wears the xLine trim, which includes:
  • Brushed stainless steel underbody protection panel
  • Air intake bars, kidney grille bars and rear trim strip in matte silver
  • Side view mirror bases, B0pillar and C-pillar in high gloss black
  • Satin aluminum exterior window trim
  • Roof rails available in Satin Aluminum or high-gloss black
  • Sport steering wheel
  • Aluminum running boards
  • 19" Orbit Grey wheels (20" Y-spoke wheels optional upgrade)

The X5 M50d features a 6 cylinder diesel good for 280 kW /381 hp and a peak torque of 740 Newton metres (546 lb-ft). It covers 0-100 km/h (62mph) in just 5.3 seconds and consumes fuel at 6.7 litres per 100 kilometres (42.2 mpg) in the EU test cycle.

Unfortunately, it will not be available in the U.S. But, it does give us a good look at its aero kit, which is essentially the M Sport kit. The only difference are the extra silver wings in the M50d's front air intakes. We've posted photos of the M Sport F15 X5 below to show how they are virtually identical to the M50d.

Unfortunately, the alcantara seats of the M50d are exclusive to the M50d and not available with the M Sport package.

Gorgeous! I currently own an E70 and I really can't understand how the new F15 is viewed by some as ugly compared to the old car. To me, it's quite the contrary: I find the new F15 a great improvement inside and especially outside

Loving the interior, but the exterior is still not doing it for me. I'm thinking some gloss black kidneys will help tremendously on this model. The chrome ones are just to 'in your face' for me if that makes sense.

i think the chrome/silver matte kidney grill looks better with darker exterior color. For instance, check the brown color image and it has black kidney. not so impressive. Also, the white with silver matte grill not impressive either.

for contemporary styling, i like the darker color exterior with silver matte kidney grill.

Why are the powerful diesels never available in the US...is it because BMW doesn't believe diesel will sell well here, or is it because of some sort of government regulation? I know BMW offers some diesels in their US line, but strange how many they do not offer...not even for special order.

You guys in the US don't get the powerful diesels because then you won't be buying as many petrol V8s. In Europe the V8 petrol doesn't sell well because high fuel prices but it does sell reasonably well in the US and Middle East, I guess. They need to sell V8 petrols as well to recoup costs for the development of that engine too. Therefore they'd rather not offer you alternatives. Anyway sweet as the powerful diesels are, the V8 petrols are far nicer imo. Enjoy them while you still can.

Still curious , how X5 50 d get canadian plates , to get plates you need PERMIT from RIV , RIV can issue permit ONLY for cars CERTIFIED for Canada . So can i import to Canada 50d from Europe ??? (I understand i need to replace front lights and something more)

That plastic on the flat fender is trying hard to give a sport appearance and failes.
The old fenders were more fluid and nicer.
The new ones look terrible!

Epic fail!

Ugly. Inside is nice thou. If the rear saved any of the masculinity of the last one it would look ok. Too much sheet metal not enough lights on the back. Looks like a traverse.

The E70's lines/design looks much better to my eyes (although I prefer the updated interior on the F15).

What is the deal with those ugly white retainers in the inner-fenders (pic 19)? BMW couldn't come up with anything better than that...

The rear of the new one is a major letdown. Interior and front are upgrades.

I've been wondering this myself - and you're probably spot-on as to why they don't offer a big diesel here...

As someone who's owned an X5 35d and X6 50i I'd concur the V8 petrol is more of a hoot..

But I'd sure like a crack at owning a big diesel

F15 is starting to grow on me more and more. MSport 50i for me but that M50d looks badass!!! Can't wait to test drive a 50i.

Can someone please tell me what's the deal with the air vents (front fender scoops) on the msport / m50d being solid on one side and half solid on the other...and they are reversed between models? Why not just leave them open? Is it really a bad thing to just allow the air to pass thru?

E70 looks a lot better from the outside. The F15 is better on the inside. The headlights on the F15 look too long as they touch the grille now and the front bumper looks weird as does the rear arrangement.
