Tar... eugh!

What do people think?
  • Any old tar spot remover from Halfrauds?
  • Specialist tar spot remover?
  • Leave it to the pro's - get the car detailed!

Was toying with getting the car detailed before winter, but not sure if it's a good time to do it, in which case I'm wondering what the best DIY approach is for these little blighters? Nearside behind the front & rear wheelarches is covered in 'em

Autoglym tar remover followed by a good coat of wax. Worked well for me when the side of my car was splattered with tar:

I use Auto Finesse Iron Out, that'll do the trick nicely. Then it needs sealing and waxing in order to make life easier next time. You might want to consider claying too.

Autoglym or autosmart tardis should do the job, with a nice layer of wax on top after a good clean.

Went for the Autoglym Intense Tar Remover in the end as it was in stock at the local Halfords. Smells unpleasant but really did the trick!

They didn't have any clay in stock, not sure if that's a good thing cos I'm a clay 'virgin' so think I may need to read up on do's/don'ts - like do I just clay the area where I removed the tar or do the whole panel (after washing)? Maybe also buy the 'right' clay online, oh yes and lubricant... I hear detailing is habit-forming and expensive

At the dealership we used Autosmart Tardis and it works very well just spray on let it soak and wipe off(repeat if necessary). If you go for Bilt Humber clay bar(recommend the soft one) it only require water as lubricant
