Track Report - Infineon - Use of 10-60W to cool car down

Participated in the Audi Driver Safety Seminar this weekend...actually taught both days...my students were one lady in the C Group in a Cayman S...and another newbie in the A group in his uncles E30 325i dedicated track car..with R compounds. But, back to the important stuff..how did my car do with 10-60W TWS BMW Motorsport oil?

Well, I am happy to say it did much better that the stock oil. The highest I had seen before using this new oil was a session at Thunderhill at 275 and one at 280 for oil temps. With this new oil...I was at about 255 on every session..except one where I was behind someone alot ..and it got up to 270. BTW it was about 58 - 72 degrees out...when I was on track. I had 5 20-35 minute sessions on Saturday..and four 20 minutes sessions on Sunday.

So, my impressions are that the 10-60W Castrol TWS Motorsport oil..which I guess the M cars come with..is a serious contender as a option for oil for those who track their cars more than occasionally. I still dont know how this oil affects other day to day driving..so I want to say that the jury is still..but preliminary data is showing that this has helped keep oil temps down.

I will leave it in my car until late december and reassess whether or not I need to go back to a lighter viscosity for those colder months. I am in California..so it doesnt get very cold...but I think if this oil has issues..it is when the ambient air temp is very low.

BTW, I just added a pic I found..I am the 335i in the pic..the other one is a friend of mine..and no..I couldnt hang with that Audi on track..it is a SCCA race car that competes in Nationals...my friend owns it..but his friend was driving it at the time.

Thanks for the report Steve. I'm wondering if the 10W "cold" is too thick for the cold mornings. Is there a 5W60 oil out there? I don't recall seeing any... I'm about to do another oil change and running 5W30 right now. Considering a 0W40 or if I can find it, 5W40.

I bet by the next corner Pat was out of site! He has an awsome car.
Is this the same oil you were saying was running hotter for the street?

you know there is a reason they recommend using a specific viscosity of motor oil for each engine right?

Yeah..he was...Eric was also driving the car...his mechanic/friend. Pat was also driving this...

Yes, this is the same oil..but I might have been wrong about the running hotter comment earlier.

Yes, I know they recommend a specific oil for the car for many reasons.

What were the outside air temps at Thunderhill with that same oil?

What is your opinion on the benefits/disadvanteges of TWS BMW Motorsport10w60 vs. 5w40 and 10w40 Redline, as well as Castrol 5w40 and 5w50?

With 5w40 valvoline synpower and 85 degree ambients, I was holding steady at 280-285 oil temps.

It's odd that the same 10w60 that Steve said gave him uber high STREET temps ended up lowering temps on track.

It was actually slightly hotter at Sears Point in the afternoon..than at Thunderhill. The oil definitely lowered the oil temps...btw, I was only in 2nd at the hairpin...the rest of the time..3rd...and in a few places went to 4th. Since I have only tried the OEM oil..and this 10w60 weight..I only have those two to go by. I think Castrol 5w50 might be a good one to try...however, I need to read up on oil viscosity stuff to be more knowledgeable...I am just going by gut right this second...

You really considering selling now...I wouldnt go that far....based on what you said. This is your daily driver right...with 10-12 or so track days per year?

The bad part is your tracks down there get much hotter than the ones up here.

why are you guys insisting on fucking with the oil, the one s4to335 is using is going to provide more protection on the parts it covers, but less protection to the parts it cant get to, it also has a higher heat capacity which is part of why it might actually be lowering his temps

putting 30 weight in though is going to provide you less protection all around have less heat capacity and if anything raise your oil temps

is it really going to make a difference, probably not

should you risk it with your $10k engine, up to you

should you encourage others to do this, absolutly not
