E90 320D - Lack of Boost - Vacuum Leak?
E90 320D late 2005
Ive had the car for about 4-5 months now, and the car im pretty sure didnt have this problem initially, but since ive owned it, to me it feels the boost isnt what it was compared to when i bought it Also, when the turbo does spool up, and boosts, it sounds as if there is air leaking, a whooshing sound in a sense, almost like a dumpvalve, and is loud enough to be just audible inside the car with windows closed Turbo spools up like normal at around 2-2.5k rev, no smoke, no signs of turbo failure The only work thats been done on the car since ive had it was i fit an EGR thermostat myself, and had the main thermostat and coolant change an Indy To me it sounds like either there is an air leak / vacuum leak or im just being paranoid. If i recall correctly, when fitting the egr you have to remove the vacuum pipento the turbo? Although ive checked and i personally cant notice any leaks unfortunately Any ideas guys? Anyone else experienced? |

Hey Basim,
Sounds like we are having the same problems with 320d's of the same age. I've done quite alot of investigation having had the turbo off and checked. Had the electronic actuator off and checked. Also serviced the engine oil, air and fuel, as well as changing the MAF and MAP sensors. 6 months in the car is still running but sometimes it is boosting correctly and other times it is not. NExt on the list is to change the vacuum controller on the EGR as I have cleaned the EGR but it seems to be sticking open and loosing boost. If you have any other ideas please share them as there is alot of random threads with similar errors. |

Hi nato, glad to know im not the only one in the same position, seems like you've been quite thorough so far, have you performed all the tests yourself?
From the sounds of it it isnt something immediatly serious, just a nuisance, although ive had a few hairy overtakes where the boost wasnt what i was expecting and left me cutting it close The turbo just seems sluggish in my case, im personally thinking it is related to the EGR system, or something in that area as i started noticing it when i was changing the EGR thermostat Im getting oil and filter changed in a few days and il see if that makes a difference, at the same time il ask if the mechanics noticed any air or vacuum leaks in the bay, il let you know what happens |

Yeah I've tried to be pretty systematic in my approach covering all the simple to check things first, although removing the turbo was a PITA but worth it to clean and check it.
I've done it all myself with some advice from a few forums and other users trails. Mine is exactly like yours and sometimes it is fine and others not. Apparently there can be a fault with the Fuel pump that can cause similar issues but they tend to be more like hiccups while revving rather than a lack of boost. Will be getting the vacuum controller soon and will let you know what my results are. |
