DIY - ipod and garmin hardwire

hey guys,

instead of using the lighter to power your ipod and garmin, i used a dual socket extension connected to the hidden power source in the armrest. then i took down the useless "coin holder" in the armrest and opened it up to thread the car adaptors for my ipod and garmin nuvi and hid them under the handbrake area. finalized it by threading the garmin cord under the console, opened up the steering wheel underside and threaded the cord to the steering wheel. i'm planning on changing my interior trim once i get my CF interior so i'll then thread the cord under that and have it come out of the driver's side middle AC vent. here are some pics....

Steps:

1. Buy dual-socket extension (Pepboys - $7.00)
2. Open Armrest
3. Using screwdriver, pry apart the coin holder. it's easier to start from the inner upper corner and work your way across.
4. using a pair of pliers, pop apart the edge of the most lateral coin holder. if you don't do this, you can't put the coin holder back into it's place.

5. open the handbrake boot. easier to put it in park then lift the bottom part first.

6. connect your ipod adapter and garmin nuvi adapter into the dual-socket and drop it into the handbrake boot.

7. connect your ipod to the auxiliary jack in the armrest.

8. thread your garmin cord under the plastic armrest edges toward the front.
9. open the driver's side undercarriage (Torx 20). Thread the cord up towards the opening under the steering wheel.
10. thread the garmin cord around the base of the steering wheel towards the edge of the front interior trim (depending on where you want to put your nav).

11. remove your front trim (if you want to completely hide the wiring) and thread the connector tip into the AC vent.

I see them, greatwork man, looks good!

But just so u know, that "USELESS" coinholder isnt a coin holder. its the vent for the heated and cooled cup holder in there. lol I wanted to use that so bad...

Other than that nice job!

thanks but again...it still seems pretty useless.

by the way, made some changes today, moved the ipod over the "VERY USEFUL" cup holder (if any of you have really used it to keep your soda cool....YEAH RIGHT !!!) area because the passenger side compartment is more useful for me. so up to you where you want to situate your ipod.

ok, i got how you routed the cable around the ebrake, but how did you get it from the ebrake to the rear of the dash. i'm assuming you tucked it underneath the side trim, but how? been medling with mine, but i can't figure how to run a cable under the trim. its a very tight space between the actual console and the carpet underneath.??????????????????????????????

you can lift up most of the side trim from the bottom of the ebrake to right before the underside trim of the steering wheel and use a screwdriver or credit card (visa/mastercard....just not Amex, hehehe) to slide the cords under the plastic trim. there's also a gap between the plastic around the ebrake and that under the gearbox. from there, you need a 6-sided torx 20 driver to remove the 3 screws underneath to be able to pass it.
i got mine from pepboys (whole set with 15 different bits for $16.00).

good luck !!!

what 4 screws?

thing is i need to get from the aux jack across to tuck it inside the passenger side trim. the last part i got, its just the stupid 4 inches from driver to passenger side.

Garmin Hardwire

right after i changed my interior trim, i figured a better way to mount my garmin nuvi....i ran the charger cable under the dashboard trim then right above the center vents. i then attached the garmin holder using double-sided tape to the dash.

PICS !!!

enjoy !!!

wouldn't the double sided tape leave residue when you remove it and how secure is that?

im sure its secure as long as he used heavy duty double sided tape or velcro. i am also sure it would get loose later on down the road, but you can always replace the double sided tape. you can also clean off the residue with a proper solvent. i would say he might have to replace the double sided tape once a year if he constantly left the navi on the holder. i think it looks pretty good and very clean for an aftermarket add on.

actually, it's pretty secure and there's been no residue left because i actually tried to move it twice. also, drove all the way to schaumburg today to the chicago meet and met up with chitownbimmer, ntpcrew13 and kiddo....garmin stayed true and steady....

the other option is to use the attachment sticky pad that comes with the garmin itself. unfortunately, i lost that one so i just ordered one from ebay.will update this thread with those pics next time.

on a side note, it was great meeting up with you guys !!! i'll post the pics in the photo section. on my way home, passed by best buy, target....no luck finding the ipod remote.....but just as i was about to give up, i found the scosche rf remote at supertarget in tinley park...they have about 4 more in stock....check out the pics. i like the fact that it works via RF and not IR so you don't need to point it to the receiver and i love how i can also switch between playlists !!!

Scosche Remote (used 3M double-sided tape) and attached to overhead console in black area beside sunroof button (took my wife 10 minutes to find it, hehehehe). i wanted to keep the OEM look.

Close-up of Scosche Remote

Scosche Receiver attached to Ipod with pass-through for charger

enjoy !!!

+1
also, i will hopefully have a V1 or passport by then...

the scosche remote is $50 at supertarget...hurry before other people pick up the last 3 units !!!

i just moved it down to the center console. my arm was getting tired reaching up there i placed it top down so that it's easier to remember the button placement. i don't even have to look at it.

Okay...i get...most of the install, but when you get the dash trim off, where do you run the wires, i haven;t looked at it yet, but i have a tomtom720 with ipod control, so i am going to run the ipod control cable, power cord, and aux audio line behind the trim into the center console.
