U.S. vs. CAN. PURCHSE

Hello,

I reside in Canada and am in the market for a new +-50k (CDN) automobile, most likely an e90. With the recent rise in value of the Canadian dollar I am looking into the option of making the purchase in the USA as the cost is much lower.

I was wondering if anyone could give me any info on what is involved when making a car purchase in the US. I am obviously mostly concerned with warranty issues, but would also like to know about exporting, brokerage fees, inspections, speedo issues etc...

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Justin

You'd have to change the speedo for sure. Duty should be roughly 6.1% and then you have to pay GST on top of that. Searching the regristrar of vehicle imports (can't remember the exact name) on the government web-site should improve your understanding as well.

ya i hear ya, but you do have to pay 6% duty + pst/gst +registration, inspection, ac, bla bla bla

if the dollar is at par you end up saving the taxes in canadian dollars, 15% is a nice savings.

its even better if you get a model that is made in US then you don't pay the 6% duty.

There is no US tax on purchases. There are state and local sales taxes in some states, and the rules for avoiding them vary. Oregon is a good choice for a purchase since the state has no sales tax.

You need to belong to this thread..

Canadian Importing Thread based on the new US Peso..

I have just finished bringing in a 2008 Legacy Limited AWD (for my wife), and saved $14,680.00 after all taxes, end to end. The whole experience was a lot of fun, and not difficult as the Subaru dealers along the border have the conveyor belt down pat, as do the Export and Import Agents on each side of the border. Met a lot of folks doing the same thing. Highly recommended if you are buying from a "friendly" Corp.. (that excluded BMW). Best of all, I get to have WA Lemon Law Protection.... Bonus!

For the Import stuff, go to RIV Canada. It's pretty good.

As an aside, I *did* meet a Canadian Woman who had a friend in Seattle work an ED for her.. she went to Europe, did the deed, when the car came back to Seattle she was on the way back with title transferred from the friend as was heading on to xxxxx (Don't want to let the big BMW po-lice give her a hard time..)..
