Physical removal of DPF - Difficult job?

Hi all,

Getting myself an 2006 E90 330D, not even collected it yet but planning upgrades!

Ill be removing the DPF myself and gutting it out / rewelding (I'm a welder to trade so won't be an issue!).

My question is, how difficult a job is it to remove the DPF itself? Plenty access etc?

Have done a search but can't seem to find any info on removal.

Cheers,

Chris

I haven't done it myself, but when I got it taken out of my 325d e92, it took the garage nearly 9 hours and they couldn't express how much of a pain in the a$$ it was to get to.

You might find this of interest:

and be aware that I believe the MOT test has now been tightened so that the removal of any emissions device is an immediate fail...

I recent did mine, mechanic by trade. It's relatively easy. Remove the full exhaust. Then remove top clamp and wiring to the sensors. Now to get the filter out is tricky. I finally did mine with the o/s engine mounting taken off. Once engine mount is off the exhaust sort of falls out!

Cutting it open and ripping insides out was easy, then you rebuild it. I took mine to a local Delphi agent and they sorted the software and remapped it

Not sure if its same on the 330d but on a 335d definatly need ramps as I woouldnt advise it on axle stands

Engine cover/aribox out so you can gain access to loosen the oxygen sensor and 2x temp sensors (these can be left on and just the wiring disconnected so when the dpf drops down you can remove it on the bench)

under tray off, part of wheel arch liner off, unbolt steering rack and move foward, undo UJ joint through access through wheel arch, undo and drop whole exhaust, undo clamp to exhaust/turbo, jack/support engine to undo engine mount and remove and then you can remove dpf (it is a very tight fit and not enough room to get hand in to handle/manovere it)

all in I would say it would take 4/5 hours to do remove and refit

just becareful the temp/O2 sensors can be stuck on and can easily round off and may require heat to undo

when putting sensors back on may help to put anti copper grease on the thread should you need to take out in futre to replace will help

Does your car definitely have a DPF? Thought it was an option that early? My 56 320D doesn't have one.

I unbolted my steering rack actually, but didn't undo the uj. Just take the bolts out and move the rack forward. I also never removed the sensors just left them in place. But that's each to there own

Nothing too major then!

Phil, any MOT center won't be able to tell the insides have been removed, so long as it passes the smoke test (Which it will) then all is well.

Collecting the car on Tuesday, hope to have the DPF gutted and mapped by August

Another question.

Seeing as I'll be removing the DPF myself, I'll need to drive a fair distance with the DPF gutted to have it remapped.

Is this likely to cause any problems?

It should not do, as the dpf pressure sensor will see no back pressure so will not do a regen. But they do smoke with the dpf off and not mapped to take it out, mine smoked like a good en on over run, but once mapped it was fine

@dan-danGT
Are you saying that a faulty backpresure sensor could mean that the car will try do regeneration despite the missing DPF?
I ask because I have removed my DPF with a DPF removal downpipe from Ecotune. But sometimes it seems that my car is trying to regenerate which causes a small lack of power, changed sound, slower autobox shift like it tries to keep higher revs and quite a lot of diesel smoke. But after a good warm run all above stops. It all repeats aprox 1 time every 14 days.
If I have a faulty sensor that could be the reason for that.

@Chrisboom
Ecotune has pipes for 330d also. I have one fitted on mine. Can highly recomend it. Perfect fit and really looks like it will last longer than the car :-)

I couldn't face paying £350 for something that I could do myself for free haha.

Yes very much so, but I think what you might find is your dpf is filling with ash, which is none regenable. Once ash content is too high it's a throw away and fit a new one or a dpf delete. There is only one sensor on the dpf which is between the cat and the dpf, so it monitors the pressure before the filter. If there is more pressure than it likes it will try and regen.

I removed my filter and drove the car for a few days it drove fine, also be side there is only one sensor chances of it doing a regen would be slim, unless it also does it on a mileage basis then it might try to regen. Our vans at work only do a regen depending on the soot content and a mileage at the very last resort.

Hahaha I can understand that. I can't create it myself.
But I can fix my computer myself instead of paying some Bozo in the shop for it ;-)

I have had my DPF removed already. Hence It can't mesure if the presure raises because of sood.
But I think I might have a faulty presure sensor then...

Yes it will !! As there is no backpressure Your turbo will overboost and shred itself to pieces.

This is why Ecotune will not sell the pipe on its own without the revised map to go with it

What a load a bull! Never read so much crap in my life! How can it over boost when it's all electrically controlled by the ecu? It does have such things as a boost pressure sensor!

They won't sell a pipe without the map as its easier and less hassle selling it complete with the map! Plus people will probably just for the pipe and leave it without a map to save price
