More exhaust "gurgle" without catless dp's?

Hi everyone,

I've decided for now that I'm not ready to mess around with catless downpipes. I don't want to fuss with CEL's and readiness yet since I have an '09 and will be due for emissions within the year.

However, I still want the gurgle sound of the downpipes. I miss the lively gurgle of my old mini cooper s, the 335i sounds so much better (and gurgles a tiny bit) but it doesn't have the character. Yeah, I know I can tune out the CEL and I have a dpfix laying around, but I'm just not messing with it for now.

I have a cobb accessport in the mail, and will be downloading ATR once I have the info to request it.

Is it possible to tune the overrun in ATR to produce more exhaust burble? If so, where in ATR would I accomplish this? Thanks in advance, I appreciate it

I'm running the Stage 1+FMIC with only a "MIG golf tee" (welded the flap open because it was worn and rattling, and I didn't want to listen to it anymore) and it's got a nice little bit of the snap crackle pop I remember from my old VW days...

If you made your lambda AFR's richer in ATR that would do it, but I would avoid going that route. You can delete your secondary cats and/or plug up that vacuum muffler valve.

^^ this, so I would recommend a different exhaust such as; Vanguard, Dinan, BMW PE, or BMW 'IS" for more gurgle. Then, when you get DPs

Gonna keep secondary cats for when I have downpipes. Did the golf tee/unplug mod the day I bought the car lol. If I can come up with double the cash I need for downpipes plus install from my summer job, I'm gonna get them . Would love BMW pe too, but that's not gonna happen for a while.

Thanks, I'll try lightly adjusting the lambda afr. Loving stage1 aggressive, just got the Cobb today.

Edit: Which table in ATR is for the lambda AFR? There isnt once specifically called lambda AFR under "fuel tables"

Fuel (Bank 1) and Fuel (Bank 2). Make sure they are the same.

This is like the 3rd of 4th thread this week...

Guys the whole flames and gurgle thing is your car running rich and this is not optimal from a tuning standpoint.

Sure this BMW gurgles normally and yes it's just excess and un-burnt fuel. If you want the noise and visuals richen up your AFR but I'm not recommending it.

Agree, play with exhaust all you want but messing with the AFR will make your car slower for no reason.

The old school big cracks and flames shooting out the tailpipes on overruns was because carburetors and very early FI systems don't have closed throttle fuel cutoffs - cool to watch, but inefficient.

Thanks for all the input. I'll play around with slightly richer AFR's tonight, but it sounds like I really need downpipes to get the sound I want (or muffler delete, but that's probably louder that I want it)

Yup. I have downpipes and the PE. Every time I let off the pedal, there is tons of gurgle.

If you dont want to go catless, what about racecat? I dont know how much it will the increase the sound level but it should. Not sure but racecats will be sufficient to pass emission test no?

Doing Golf tee mod helps a lot and a worn stock exhaust just sounds lovely.

I wouldnt change afr, it's not that straight forward as installing catless DP and the fix.. be happy that there exist a way to pass the readness.

Rather than messing around with the AFR tables, you could just lightly tap the gas pedal on decel and that will re-activate the fuel causing gurgle on command.
