Lightbulb Brakes buying decision helper: "Factory", "M Sport Brakes", "M Performance Brakes"

BMW just confuses us customers/drivers with all those possible brake options.
I hope this will bring some light into brake dust of F3x brakes!

Below please find the Easter 2015 large content update of this post!

The following link takes you to a Onedrive Excel list where I list all the F3x Modells and all the brake variants (standard and options)
https://1drv.ms/x/s!AqdJMMUQxA-nhZs6_JWYyQG6amQ0jA

Original Brakes Variant 1:
Front rotor: 300x22mm (Millimeter) / Brake Caliper with 1 piston
Rear rotor: 300x20mm / Brake Caliper with 1 piston

Original Brakes Variant 2:
Front rotor: 312x24mm (Millimeter) / Brake Caliper with 1 piston
Rear rotor: 300x20mm / Brake Caliper with 1 piston

Original Brakes Variant 3: Cars with Sport Package P337A = YES
Front rotor: 330x24mm (Millimeter) / Brake Caliper with 1 piston
Rear rotor: 300x20mm / Brake Caliper with 1 piston
(some cars show also to have 330x20mm Rear rotor with this upgrade)

Original Brakes Variant 4: 335i, 335d or Cars with Reinforced Brakes S102A = YES
Front rotor: 340x24mm (Millimeter) / Brake Caliper with 4 piston
Rear rotor: 330x20mm / Brake Caliper with 1 piston

Option (Factory upgrade) with S2NHA M Sport Brakes (blue colored):

S2NHA Variant 1: all not listed under Variant 2
Front rotor: 340x30mm (Millimeter) / Brake Caliper with 4 piston
Rear rotor: 345x24mm / Brake Caliper with 2 piston

S2NHA Variant 2: (all 335i/d Version, Europe Version of 325d, 328i, 330d)
Front rotor: 370x30mm (Millimeter) / Brake Caliper with 4 piston
Rear rotor: 345x24mm / Brake Caliper with 2 piston

Option of Dimple drilled and slotted rotor:
For all the original brakes with 340mm rotors, one can buy aftermarket original BMW replacement brake rotors in dimple drilled and slotted flavor.

For the factory upgrade with S2NHA M Sport Brakes (blue colored) one can also buy aftermarket original BMW replacement brake rotors in dimple drilled and slotted flavor.
Available Front Size 340mm and 370mm (18" Wheels needed with 370mm rotor in Summer and Winter!!)
Rear rotor: 345mm (all models)

So and now what about the "M Performance Brakes"?
For a "high power" car owner (Europe 328i, 335i, 330d, 335dx):
Basically they are the same as if one would order the S2NHA option and then aftermarket change to the rotors to the BMW replacement brake rotors in dimple drilled and slotted flavor.

For a "low power" car owner (models below 328i, 325d or US Model 328i):
It's a much bigger upgrade. As they get 370mm front rotors instead of just a 340mm front rotors they would get by the S2NHA Sport Brake Option for those models.

So if one is looking for dimple drilled and slotted front and rear rotors, and brake rotors with 370mm in front and 345mm in rear. M Performance Brakes is your choice.
They come in different caliper colors: Yellow, Orange, Red

M Performance Brakes need 18" Wheels in Summer and Winter

M Performance Power Kit (for 330d and 335dX only):
Needs a brake upgrade to S2NHA M Sport Brakes or 18" M Performance Brake!

Please feel free to comment upon found errors.

Cheers

Wow, so from what I see if I have a 335i with 2NH, all I have to do to get the exact same configuration as the $3k M Performance Brakes is to upgrade my rotors to the slotted ones. Just checked the prices online and this would be a grand total (2NH + then the rotors) of $1,600 or something. That's a lot of savings! Then of course you could sell you old rotors as new or lightly used and make this even lower. It's hard to believe but why not.

(This is USD prices)

2NH and m perforance are the same except drilled slotted discs. Does drilled and slotted help u stop better?

There is some Information here, about what dimple drilled and slotted disc are good for.
http://ebcbrakes.com/product/3gd-sport-rotors/

In racing situations certainly they are bether.
But also in normal street conditions I see some advantages:
- much bether braking in wet street conditions (braking in heavy rain conditions)
- drinving downhill with heavy load or a hanger (where regular Brakes tend to brake fading)

It's not only about the rotor, also the brake pads are very important to reach a high friction in cold and hot brake situations.
So you need to look at brakes as a system!

Correct! (for the 335i as you have)
If you like the blue calippers together with your car Body color, go for it.

You'll need 18" Wheels with those Brakes!

And don't expect to get too much for your "old" rotors. See some other offerings here in this Forum.

Hi oceanview ! This is a great thread. Thx so much for the detailed advice.
I've ordered a 428i with the M sport blue brakes. I was thinking of changing the factory discs with the drilled and slotted M Performance discs. Just confirming that this is okay. Also the wheels will be 19". The brakes should be ok with the wheels right??
I've heard that the drilled and slotted discs are quite squeaky. Is that correct?
Thx in advanced.

Hi
The factory option "S2NHA M Sport Brakes" on a 328i will change your front rotor size to 370x30mm. So they are the same size as the 18" M Perfomance Brakes.
Yes you can change those rotors to 18" M Performance Brake Rotor in dimple drilled and slotted flavor.
Front rotor: 370mm = Part Number 34 10 6 797 603
Rear rotor: 345mm = Part Number 34 20 6 797 600

Yes those rotors make some noise, but it's not squeaky at all.
The sound is more a "schhhhhhhhh" not a "eeeeeaaaaaak"
You can also hear the noise when drinving with open windows and not pushing the brakes.

You need at least 18" wheels (also for winter tire Setup. Probably Overkill Australia :-) ).
I heard not all 18" wheel will fit, so check before buying.
Anyway your going to 19", that's fine!

My Combo is with 20" for Summer and 18" for Winter. On the pic you see the 20" 405M wheels.

Mine aren't squeaky at all. Your mileage may vary however.

Is the weight listed for the 335 2NH option correct? More than 50 percent heavier than the slotted versions and the 1" smaller non 2NH version? Something doesn't seem right. For the non 2NH brakes, the slotted versions are only .1 lb lighter. I'd imagine something similar on the 335 2NH version.

No, it's not 50% heavier. I believe that there was a 10 lb. difference between the OEM/standard 335i rotor and the slotted/drilled M-Performance rotor. When I held them side-by-side, I didn't personally feel a 10 lb. difference, but my arms aren't scales either.

Hey Ocean ! Thanks for such the quick reply.

Just checking for a 328i or 428i the rear rotor part nuber is 34 20 6 797 598 rather than 34 20 6 797 600. Is this correct ??

34 20 6 797 600 is for ? 335 or 435i ?? I am not sure

Thx

The stats above say the standard 335 rotor is 340x30 and weigh 22 lbs. it also says the 2NH brakes are 370x30 and 36 lbs. So basically an increase of 1" in diameter. It doesn't make sense that one would gain 14 lbs from a 1" gain in diameter. Based on volume of material, the increase in size has 18% more material so should be 18% heavier, which takes it from 22 to 26 lbs. I checked online and although the numbers above are listed correctly, my guess is there is a typo somewhere, probably the "26" became "36".

I could not find out what exactly the difference of 34206797598 to 34206797600 is. Both are listed for the 428i.
Please ask your dealer.

I took the weight Information form the BMW online part cataloge. I have no other source to verify. I agree that the listed weight of:
34 10 6 797 606 Standard rotor 370x30mm (S2NHA Standard rotor for 335i)
16.50 Kilogramm / 36.4 Pounds
seems quite high compared to the other 340 or 370 Rotors.
Maybe someone has another source to check.

I definitely think it's a typo. I have my OEM 335i rotors in the garage. I'm going to take it to the gym and weigh it.

Boy I'm glad I found this thread. I was thinking of buying a pair of M-Performance brakes off ebay to upgrade my F30 but I just dropped $1500 on new winter tires and they're 17's that would have sucked lol. Definitely not worth buying 18" winter and spending another $1500. Thanks.

Any idea if it is possible to upgrade just the rear brakes/discs in the 335i ? Perhaps to the same brakes/discs in the fronts?

Well in theory you could just Change the brake rotor and caliper from 330mm diameter rotor to 345mm diameter rotor.
However I strongly recommend not to do that unless checked with your dealer!

It could be that this could badly influence the brake balance and other security features like cornering brake system, ABS, Stability control....

Sure it could work, as models below 328i/325d upgrading to S2NHA will get:
Front rotor: 340mm / Brake Caliper with 4 pistons
Rear rotor: 345mm / Brake Caliper with 2 Pistons

But I don't know if any programming needs/could be done with such a Setup.
Again, check with your dealer!

Good Point. I outlined now the need of 18" wheels in my OT!

Anyway, ordering the "Sport Pack" option already includes 18" wheels. So one could use those for winter setup and get yourself some good looking 19 or 20" for summer Setup :-). (That's what I did)
