BMW performance exhaust vs Stock

So I was doing some research and for what I understand that in some cases the BMW Performance Exhaust it actually produces less HP then the stock exhaust.

Now my question is, I plan of doing a few mods ( Cobb or JB4, Intake ) will the Performance Exhaust be more "effective" with the mods or should I keep the stock exhaust ?

Don't know if it matters, but I don't plan on getting a DP since it seems it causes a few issues, especially if you have to have to have the car inspected by the state.

I do like the sound of the Performance Exhaust, so what would you guys advice ? Keep stock or upgrade ?

PS : I have an N55 engine.

Thanks,

how would a performance exhaust decrease hp? Maybe it does, I haven't read up on it. But thinking about it in my head, it just doesn't make sense.

regardless, exhausts usually only barely make a difference in hp

A few people have pointed out this thread and article. Which is why I was asking.

Its just a sound generator, only exhaust mod that adds more power is down pipes. That being said you can still get a pretty strong car without them.

Dousn't matter. Only thing it will change is your exhaust tone.

Even if you lose a few ponies (which I doubt) weight savings might compensate. I'm assuming BMW pe is lighter...actually dont know that for sure. I do know the stock exhaust is quite heavy.

Meh...you are not really comparing apples to apples since this was done on the 135 system. In addition, you are not going to feel any loss of 2-10 whp on your butt dyno. The exhaust mod is only for sound if you want performance change your DPs and add all supporting mods for a Stage II tune.

x2 for downpipes in terms of performance. Also if you want to go the "sound mod" route you can get the 335IS exhaust for half the price of the BMW performance exhaust. There is also the golf tee mod which is free.

I'm not sure about the DP since I understand it give a few lights or errors, I still need to find out more on this. DO you guys have any more info on this ?
DP is a fairly cheap mode which I'd like to do but only if I don't have to deal with much after installing it.
Hope you understand. Thanks!

You will need this if you upgrade your DPs....race cats or no cats. I have AR catted DPs and still required this fix in order to get rid of error codes.

I have a PE, doesn't add or decease anything imo... was stock with it on for about 2 weeks... I did a few pulls in ds noticed no change...

It dose make my car sound sick, that's why i got it... combined with COBB&FMIC maps it's F%$Kin great. I love the PE for what it's ment to do, making a great note.

PE imo is a sweet mod and I have never regerted it.

Thanks, I made this thread on a different section but a mod moved it here. I actually have an N55 engine. Is there a fix for it with that engine ?

Thanks again !

Main reason I wanted it was for the noise it makes. I just don't think there is a fix for the DP mod on an N55 engine, at least I've had no luck find in anything on this

There are many dynos that show an increase in ponies and tq with DCI and full Catless Exhast. It not just noise.

aFe have a dyno with their N54 DCI and Mach Exhast and there was an increase in performance. You can check it out on YouTube or their site.

Ive used dynojets before and known of shops that alters throttle to give their products better results such as intercoolers. all one has to do is give less throttle input or increase /decrease boost to get the numbers to screen shot. its your butt dyno placebo effect, as many ppl already stated they didnt feel anything. cat delete may yield the most gains but op was asking about an exh.

This is the package I have but I have the DCI instead of the flatbed filter-

It's not just the cat delete...but I respect your opinion, each to there own.

Ooops....yeah, here is a thread about using the BMS CanTool for a DP fix. Works for the N55.

I'lll do a search b/c I cant remember. I did find one vendor that provides them for the BMWs but I cant remember the name. Plus, back then I finally figured out all I need is the BMS DP fix for the N54. I'll post it if I can find the mfg for the O2 sensor spacer.

FYI...contact Cobb b/c they might have a way to bypass the O2 sensor error code so you can pass emissions.
