i drive car purchase help please
A friend looking to buy an e90 325i has asked me to post this...any help appreciated.....
quote " A couple of months ago I had a look at a 325 M Sport touring. 2006 56 plate. It was too expensive, but I went to the video shop yesterday and saw that it was still for sale. Rang the guy and he's desperate to sell it but it has now developed a problem with the i-drive after getting it valetted. It was all good when I test drove it. He reckons £1250 at the main dealer to fix. Anyone know anything about these systems at all ? I'm thinking of offering him £1250 less than his new asking price and getting it sorted myself .... The car is a 2006 56 3 series touring. The guy had it valetted which included steam cleaning the engine bay, but then afterwards the screen for the nav etc won't come on at all. He's taken it to a dealer who has put it on their diagnostic and they tell him it needs a new unit. The question really is can it be fixed do they think, or if not, is there an alternative to getting it replaced at a main dealer - specialist perhaps ? Cheers D |

What work are they quoting to do for £1250?
It could be worth a gamble and hopefully only needs a fuse or a few sensors I'd of thought! It still amazes me that people think its ok to pressure wash/steam clean engine bays of modern cars full of electronics! All because they are too lazy to use a cloth and a decent cleaner |

Offer him £1250 less than his offering price.
Ebay is full of CCC (old navigation). Or your friend can upgrade to CIC (new navigation) for that money.

Ask him to see a quote from BMW to repair and I bet it will be more than £1250. This offer him that plus a bit more less than his asking price given the car has sat a while and faulty electronics won't help.
I would just be a bit concerned there is more than idrive that has gone faulty and it could be troublesome. |

BMW car electronics are well integrated, as davy said, there might be more wrong with the car.. And if you do not know much about BMW systems, I would be wary of the car unless you are getting a very good deal..
I would recommend a full car health check at an indy before buying it..

Step very carefully with this pal
The £1,250 is for a direct swap for a new unit .... Remember that you will have to trade your old unit to BMW. Only thing if say is if it could have damaged something like the I drive would it not have damaged something else? Just remember that BMW charge ***£90**** just to run diagnostics on your car so personally and at times you might have to get it diagnosed more than once so be ready pal ..... If you have more than one electrical problem (most likely .... Get ready to pay £90 more than once ) I would offer him less but just be ready for something wrong happening just incase pal Also he hasn't included the labour BMW charge you to put the Nav unit in that is roughly £60 I know all about the sat Nav unit costs and labour as iv looked into having mine replaced ( see my posts) You might think its a bargain but it will be a pain in the AR*SE if things go wrong Last edited by Kassim786; 06-17-2013 at 10:35 AM.. |

The idrive unit has got nothing under the bonnet, I can't think of a single thing that is related there other than a SAM (fuse box and relays).
However, there are control units that are part of the cars can bus system that the idrive needs to boot up with, if one of those are fried and you can bus loop is now broken that would cause the idrive not to boot. I reckon it will be a £20 fix or a fix you never work out without spending thousands. Are you a gambling man?? |
